Excerpt from the Book

DAMAIC CYCLE

The DAMAIC cycle is a scientific method that is used to rectify existing problems in the production processes and systems. The main aim of this cycle is to eliminate or reduce variation from a process or a product. The term variation means that there is a difference between what the customers want and the state of the product or service. Usually this difference indicates a defect or an error in process or the product. So the DAMAIC cycle is a methodology that is used to strive to come up with a near to perfection product or service. In this discussion product will be taken to mean both the product and the service. DAMAIC stands for the define-measure-analyze improve-control cycle. This is a process that is both statistical and non-statistical. Variation can be taken to mean deviation; which is a deviation from the required specification that arises from failure to reach a target. The variation could be as a result of the excessive use of money or time. DAMAIC aims to reduce variation starting from the value adding processes. Processes have got their standards or expectations. This cycle must identify the variations and find ways to improve the process and sustain the system. The cycle is a result-focused one that uses data, facts and metrics as a tool for decision making and problem rectification. This essay explains how an organization conducts the DAMAIC cycle.
