Excerpt from the Book

3.2. Data Security

According to the report of stern, the documentation about every employee was very detailed and included many private issues. In these documents were for example reports about an employee who was certified as unfit for work like: “wants to get pregnant, but the fertilization did not work”. The statement of Lidl was that these personal data were used for a better personal planning and to employ them in a way according to their health. Lidl also admitted that they collected data about private issues which did not respect the privacy of the data. (Manager Magazin, 2009) The major reproach of the privacy groups was that the Lidl-branches instructed private detective to observe the employees in such a detailed way, besides the efforts of trying to reproduce for example also how often employees use the restroom during their shifts or if and where they have a tattoo. (DPA, 2008)

The reason for this was officially that these cameras were installed by private detectives to reduce the cases of shoplifting of customers but also from the employees which is a serious problem for most of the discounters. In 2007 Lidl had approximately losses of €80 million because of shoplifting which could be a reason not to waive the observation and also it should not be forgotten that the observation has a preventive effect.
