[...] This term paper aims at summarizing the knowledge base about this relatively young subject of investigation that is endurance addiction, representative of sports addiction. Due to the limited focus of this paper, the subject of addiction in risky sports with its very specific characteristics of “pushing boundaries” and “looking for adventure” cannot be included. Likewise, addiction in the bodybuilding sport has to be left out of the discussion. Since sports addiction and herewith endurance addiction is considered a behavioral addiction, it is imperative to first define the term behavioral addiction. Subsequently, the phenomenology of running addiction will be presented extensively, more precisely by deriving a definition in conjunction with the determination of diagnostic criteria. Then the circumstances that can be conducive to sports addiction and the causes of sports addiction are discussed. Another point of interest is the topic of withdrawal symptoms occurring addiction-specifically with refraining from sports. Subsequently, the question about therapeutic approaches and therapy possibilities should be raised. [...]

Zielsetzung und Themenschwerpunkte (Objectives and Key Themes)
This paper aims to summarize the current understanding of endurance addiction, a type of sports addiction. Due to the paper's limited scope, addiction in high-risk sports and bodybuilding is excluded. The paper will define behavioral addiction, explore the phenomenology of running addiction, including diagnostic criteria, discuss contributing circumstances and causes, and examine withdrawal symptoms and therapeutic approaches. The scarcity of literature on this relatively new field is also acknowledged.- Defining behavioral addiction and its relevance to sports addiction.
- Phenomenology of running addiction and establishing diagnostic criteria.
- Exploring the contributing circumstances and causes of endurance addiction.
- Examining the withdrawal symptoms associated with ceasing endurance activities.
- Reviewing therapeutic approaches for endurance addiction.
Zusammenfassung der Kapitel (Chapter Summaries)
I. Introduction: This introductory chapter establishes the context of sports addiction, particularly endurance addiction, within the broader context of Western societies where physical work is declining and the concept of "sport" has evolved. It contrasts the positive health benefits of regular exercise with the potential for pathological overuse, using examples of increasingly extreme endurance events like ultra-marathons. The chapter also highlights the relatively recent rise of sports addiction as a subject of scientific and public interest, tracing its recognition back to Baekelund's observations in the 1970s and linking its increased prominence to the growth of fitness culture. The chapter concludes by outlining the paper's scope, focusing on endurance addiction while excluding high-risk sports and bodybuilding addiction.
III.: This chapter delves into the definition, phenomenology, diagnosis, and causes of endurance addiction. It begins by defining and categorizing different aspects of the condition, distinguishing between healthy and pathological exercise. Diagnostic criteria are presented, followed by a discussion of factors that contribute to the development of endurance addiction. The chapter then explores both physiological and psychological approaches to understanding the underlying causes of this behavioral addiction. Finally, the chapter considers the withdrawal symptoms experienced when individuals cease their excessive exercise routines.
