This thesis aims at responding to the question, to what extent popular sport can make a contribution to the genesis, the implementation, and the fostering of a mutually acknowledged and experienced EU-identity. With sport being the major social movement in Europe - unique in its efficiency in bringing people together, being a drive for integration, bridging any kind of borders and its nonpareil ubiquity - its implementation on a European level targeting the European Union people through popular sports will sustainably and remarkably promote the idea of an EU-identity. As an example for a small but utterly profound project, the idea of a European Sports Badge (EUSB) is presented as a transnationally implementable proposal, involving and addressing EU-citizens of all nations, sexes and ages. It should be noted, though, that sports are certainly not a panacea.

Objectives and Key Themes

This work explores the extent to which popular sports can contribute to the development and fostering of a mutually acknowledged European Union identity, moving beyond the current focus on professional athletics to include broader mass-participation initiatives.

  • The role of sport as a social movement for European integration.
  • Development of a "blueprint" for EU-identity based on seven key components.
  • Historical and political evolution of the EU and its identity challenges.
  • Introduction and analysis of the European Union Sports Badge (EUSB) as a practical, sustainable project.
  • Impact of popular sports on health, social inclusion, and active citizenship.

Excerpt from the Book

1. Territory: Border lines and exclusion

The most obvious and distinct joint possession of a group is doubtlessly the territory – with regard to the roundly accepted name, the EU can rely on this fact, too. Due to its perceived implicitness, territory is predestined to be an identity marker. Despite the diversity of borders within the EU, the progressive transnational dislimitation of the EU can be taken as a key experience for EU-citizens fostering the genesis of an EU-identity, e.g. the 1992 Maastricht Treaty grants EU-citizens the right to free movement and borderless travel within “Schengenland”.

Critics object that the degree of abstraction of an EU-identity is a lot higher as it is for national identities. The EU’s political borders cannot be synchronized with its geographic borders, so the territory in which the EU-identity is supposed to be effective cannot be clearly defined. The entire European continent has always been more than just a geographic area; traditionally, it has served as more of a manifestation of political agendas. Whilst there are natural borders in three geographic directions, there are no such limitations in the East. Thence, this task has become a political issue. Moreover, it has not become obvious yet, where the EU’s final external borders will be located since they are modified with every enlargement. Consequently there will be no solid territorial object of reference for an EU-identity as long as there is no final idea of the EU as a political structure itself. Protectionism, economically, medially and politically excluding non-EU nations, is said to secure “the identity of the national communities rather than that of the EU as a whole”, although these developments have “curtailed considerably the options that are available for national governments”. One of the essential premises, the definition of the other, thus cannot be fulfilled by the criterion of territory. Subsequently, there is no lasting and solid territory an EU-identity can rely on.

Summary of Chapters

1. Mapping the road: Outlines the historical path of the European Union and the necessity of defining an EU-identity in light of current challenges.

2. The European Union and its prospective identity: Develops a comprehensive blueprint for an EU-identity by defining seven distinct components that constitute a European sense of belonging.

3. The European Union Sports Badge: One simple, smart and sustainable project: Introduces the EUSB as a practical application of the identity blueprint, specifically targeting popular sports to engage citizens across the Union.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the core focus of this research?

The work examines how popular sports can foster a tangible and shared EU-identity among citizens, addressing the gap between the EU's institutional structure and its public perception.

What are the central themes explored?

Central themes include the social power of sports, the construction of supranational identity, the role of political symbols, and the need for inclusive, grass-roots engagement.

What is the primary research goal?

The goal is to determine to what extent popular, non-professional sports can function as a tool for creating an EU-identity that is transnationally implementable and socially accepted.

What methodology does the author apply?

The author conducts a multidisciplinary analysis, combining historical review, discourse analysis of political integration, and the development of a conceptual identity "blueprint" tested against a proposed sports initiative.

What does the main part cover?

It covers the historical evolution of the EU, the analysis of seven identity components (territory, language, legal framework, etc.), and the development of the European Union Sports Badge (EUSB).

Which keywords define this work?

Key terms include EU-identity, European Union, popular sports, integration, EUSB, and Europeanization.

How does the EUSB project differentiate between popular and professional sports?

The project highlights that professional sports are often tied to commercial interests and global industry, whereas popular sports offer inclusive, non-profit participation that directly involves ordinary citizens.

Why is the "dwarfed section" of popular sports significant in this context?

It signifies the current neglect of mass-participation sports in EU policy, which the author argues is a missed opportunity for fostering a collective sense of European belonging.

How does the author address the "confusion of tongues"?

The author argues that while linguistic diversity is a hurdle, the non-verbal nature of sports allows them to transcend language barriers and act as a universal connector within the EU.

What is the conclusion regarding the necessity of an EU-identity?

The author concludes that an EU-identity is essential for the Union's future viability, suggesting that such an identity is not a threat to national identities but a necessary supplement for social cohesion in times of crisis.
