Why theory is important for scientific investigators and business professionals? Could theorists generate theory from trial and error approach, or a good theory must follow and go beyond specific virtues? Does theory necessarily require application? Eventually, do business professionals practice real business problems without theory? Theory's precise nature involves a vigorous debate among social scientists, academics, and business professionals. The theme of the debate is embedded in different types of theory and in the scholarly views of what constitutes a good theory. In this paper, we present three views on the nature and types of theory, focus on the relationship between theory and research, and identify theoretical directions through which research can contribute to theory.

Research Objectives and Themes

The primary objective of this paper is to explore the nature and types of scientific theory, specifically examining the reciprocal relationship between theory and empirical research. It addresses the debate regarding what constitutes a "good" theory and provides an orientation toward short-term liquidity measurement theory as a practical application of these theoretical concepts.

  • Analysis of diverse scholarly definitions and perspectives on theory.
  • Distinction between theory and related concepts such as hypotheses, paradigms, and models.
  • Synthesis of theory traditions and the cycle of scientific work.
  • Exploration of research contributions to theory through originality and utility dimensions.
  • Evaluation of short-term liquidity measurement theory within financial analysis.

Excerpt from the Book

Relationship between Theory and Research

The extent literature suggests that research (both quantitative and quantitative) contributes to theory bi-dimensionally (Gay & Weaver, 2011). A theory pertaining to a certain phenomenon can be constructed through the research process, including identifying original idea, collecting and analyzing data of the phenomenon in which the theory is involved. If a theory has already been developed; hence, the focus will be on testing the theory’s propositions and validating results that should be consistent with the original theory. If the research instruments fail to produce similar results as to the original theory, the researcher should reformulate the scientific method to find out a better explanation as to the phenomenon being investigated. In turn, the generation of theory helps bridging the chasm between research and practice through the integration between the theoretical perspectives and the philosophical assumptions used in the research process.

In research projects, researchers heavily engage with a review of the relevant literature to gather theoretical explanations about a phenomenon being investigated. Ellis and Levy (2008) clearly demonstrate the relationship between theory and research at the problem formulation stage as the starting point for a scientific research. A well-structured problem statement should establish the potential for generating a theory. For example, if the phenomenon is the quality of financial ratios for evaluating the performance of small business enterprises, then each set of financial ratios that measures an organization's performance from a particular facet will be identified. In other words, financial theories explaining financial ratios’ function will be emerged. Consequence of this stage is that these theories guide the researchers to create different research methods, develop relevant hypotheses, identify methods for data gathering and analysis, and reach a conclusion. As well as, the researchers will connect their findings to the original research questions and discuss the results in light of theories and empirical evidence gathered during the research process.

Chapter Summary

1. Introduction: This chapter introduces the importance of theory for scientific investigators and business professionals, outlining the paper's scope and the debate surrounding the connection between theory and research.

2. Literature Review: This section provides a comprehensive overview of various scholarly definitions of theory, discussing key themes such as minitheories, scientific ingredients, and positivist versus post-positivist paradigms.

3. Discussion and Findings: This chapter synthesizes theory traditions and details the bidirectional relationship between research and theory, specifically illustrating these concepts through short-term liquidity measurement.

4. Recommendations: This section highlights the necessity of imposing systemic rigor on the theory-building process to reach a consensus on theoretical definitions.

5. Conclusion: The final chapter summarizes the primary findings, reinforcing the interdependence of theory and research while calling for further empirical studies on variable measurement.

6. References: A complete list of all academic sources and literature cited throughout the research paper.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the core focus of this research paper?

The paper focuses on the nature and definition of theory, exploring how theory is constructed and how it interacts with empirical research across different scientific and business disciplines.

What are the primary themes discussed in the work?

The central themes include the definitions of theory, the distinction between theory and related concepts (models, paradigms, hypotheses), the role of originality and utility in research, and the application of these concepts in financial liquidity measurement.

What is the main research objective?

The primary objective is to analyze the relationship between theory and research and to provide a clear orientation on how theoretical propositions are generated and validated in practice.

Which scientific methods are analyzed in the paper?

The paper examines both qualitative and quantitative research methods, including case studies, hypothesis testing, and the use of deductive and inductive reasoning to build knowledge.

What does the main body of the text cover?

The main body covers the literature review on theory definitions, the discussion of theory traditions, the relationship between theory and research processes, and the practical case of short-term liquidity measurement.

Which keywords characterize this paper?

Key terms include theory-building, scientific work cycle, liquidity ratios, positivist vs. post-positivist paradigms, and empirical research.

How does the author define a "good" theory?

According to the cited literature, a good theory is characterized by specific ingredients such as descriptive ability, explanatory power, heuristic value, testability, parsimony, and internal consistency.

What is the significance of the "short-term liquidity measurement" example?

It serves as a practical example to demonstrate how traditional ratios and cash flow approaches interact with theoretical frameworks to explain financial phenomena and predict potential insolvency.

Why does the author emphasize the cycle of scientific work?

The author highlights this cycle to show the continuous, reciprocal connection between discovery and testing, where research informs theory and vice versa.
