Excerpt from the Book
3. The heroic theme
There is the leitmotif of “death- in- life” (l.561) in “Enoch Arden”. There is the fear of a kind of life which is no life at all. Enoch`s life on the island serves as an example of such “death-in-life”. Likewise when Enoch returns, fate does not offer him change and improvement, and he passes from one kind of non- existence to another. Now that Annie has remarried, his most important reason for his existence is destroyed. His self-realisation would be death to her happiness:
“Now when dead man came to life beheld
His wife his wife no more, and saw the babe (…)
Stagger’ d and shook, holding the branch and fear’ d
To send abroad a shrill and terrible cry “ (ll. 754-766).
From my point of view the poem portrays the tradition of morality. It shows the development from happiness, through distress, difficulty, despair, sacrifice to salvation. It is a course of heroic pilgrimage similar to “The Pilgrim`s Progress” by John Bunyan (Part I published in 1678) which as well presents a man leaving behind his wife and children.
