Dorothy Leigh Sayers was born at Oxford on 13th June 1893, the only child of the Rev. Henry Sayers, of Anglo-Irish descent. Her father was at the time headmaster of Christ Church College, and she was born in the headmaster's house. Henry Sayers made an impressive clerical and schoolmasterly career.1 Her mother, Helen Mary Leigh Sayers, was the daughter of a solicitor.2 The maiden name of Helen Mary Sayers was Leigh. This name was given to Dorothy as her second first name. This initial “L” was always very important for her and if somebody forgot it he or she had to expect a reproach. 3 Dorothy Sayers was brought up at Bluntisham Rectory, Cambridgeshire. She was already sixteen years old when she started to visit a school. Before she was thaught latin, french, music (she learned to play the violin and had singing lessons) and german by her father, aunt and mother. Excerpt from the Book

3.4 The appearance and the character of Lord Peter Wimsey

Lord Peter Wimsey was not very tall – in fact, he was rather a small man, but he didn´t look undersize. He had hard grey eyes, a long receding forehead, blond hair brushed back, a long narrow chin, a long nose, a long, indeterminate mouth, and very long and thin fingers.12 He was indeed a bibliophilist, a musician, a connoisseur, and a multi – linguist. He wore eye – glass which doubled as a magnifying glass, and he carried a stick which doubled as a device for measuring and for selfdefense.

His behaviour was always perfect and he had good manners. The people liked him because of his friendly, gently, talkative and humorous nature. That made it easy for him to get information even out of people who normally didn´t talk a lot.

In his freetime he loved to play cricket, collected rare books and he was known as a wine connoisseur. He was although famous for his love affairs all over the world.

But sometimes he reacts arrogant, condescending and vain. This might be because of his background and the fact that he is very wealthy and well known. His perfect behaviour towards other people was a kind of protection wall for him. He never spoke about his feelings, needs or faults. This protection wall and illusion of a perfect man broke when he met Harriet Vane. She is able to open him and he shows the first time his real inner character. Because of her he understands that he has to stop to hide from himself.
