In our global world nowadays where international competition forces companies to act in many different countries leadership abilities, which are usually linked to the success or failure of international operations, has to approach a new dimension (Hodgett & Luthans, 2003). Today the leader is confronted with the challenge to cross national borders while acting both transactional and successful. Nevertheless, it is important to be aware of the fallacy that something which, works successful in one culture can just be transferred to others without adjusting it on cultural diversities. First of all this work, provides a definition of leadership and describe its basis. Furthermore, the common theories and different styles of leadership will be presented. Two points about cross-cultural aspects and important managerial aspects follow it. In the end there will be a case study to show the practical meaning and importance of the topic.

Excerpt from the Book

7. Case Study

The present case is about the German Media AG who has taken a controlling interest in a French printing firm. The German parent company replaced leaving or retired French senior managers with their own ones, which lead to a change in the style of leadership. This strategy causes considerable problems in the subsidiary company. It is important for the background to know that French institutions in general are regardless of their size, highly centralised. The President Directeur General (PGD) manages through a strict hierarchy according to functional lines and top-down communications.

In the case the French company is headed by Monsieur Warner who had no experience of managing in the private sector as he had worked for the Ministry of Finance in Paris before. Due to that he needs strong achievement from his senior managers in the day-to-day business. Monsieur Abel, the responsible production director, who holds this position over 20 years was retired and has been replaced by Dr. Bernhard, a 35 years old German manager.
