Der Agenda-Setting-Ansatz geht davon aus, dass die Häufigkeit der medialen Berichterstattung über ein bestimmtes Thema dessen wahrgenommene Relevanz beim Publikum beeinflusst. Er entstand aus einer Untersuchung von Maxwell McCombs und Donald Shaw im Jahr 1972. Zu dieser Zeit konnten nur klassische Massenmedien wie Printmedien, Radio und Fernsehen herangezogen werden – das World Wide Web gab es damals noch nicht. Durch die Digitalisierung sieht die Berichterstattung heute ganz anders aus: Auch soziale Netzwerke wie facebook und twitter haben einen erheblichen Einfluss auf die Nachrichtenrezeption. Agenda-Setting-Effekte können daher anders ausfallen.

Diese Arbeit untersucht den Unterschied zwischen Agenda-Setting-Effekten in den traditionellen Massenmedien und den in sozialen Netzwerken. Die Hypothese ist damit, dass sie Unterschiede aufweisen. Dazu wird die erste Studie zum Agenda-Setting-Ansatz von McCombs und Shaw mit einer aktuelleren Studie von Deen Freelon zu Agenda-Setting-Effekten auf Facebook verglichen.
