4.2.2. Environtmental Uncertainty

ICA AB encounters and copes with uncertainty in traditional way. While ZARA deals with environmental uncertainty in a responsive manner. For the purpose of making forecasts about next clothing season, ICA AB relies heavily on past year sales data. Alternatively, ZARA has elimated uncertainty by analysing customer demand from the sales floor. Company’s employees interact frequently with their customers and also asked for their opinions thus this aspect decreases the uncertainty level in regard to the production clothing collection which supposed to be produced in future. It has been realised that such flexibility level needs proximity to the market and the appropriate set-up of supply chain logistics.

In planning clothing assortment for the recent season, management of ICA AB used to take one year period. Quantities of clothing assortment are computed on the basis of retrieved sales data of company’s database. Decisions regarding the prognosis of different styles are made after visiting to fairs held in Amsterdam, London, Paris and Berlin. Moreover other activities (such as acquiring information from fashion magazines, browsing internet on daily basis and visiting rivals’ stores frequently) also helped ICA AB management in this regard. On the basis of these activities, clothing designs are made and acquired from the company’s suppliers (located in other countries).

It has been analysed that ICA AB’s management does not bound its suppliers with respect to keeping necessary materials (supplementary resources and fiber) in stock beforehand. However, ZARA used to keep basic materials in stock beforehand. This aspect directs ZARA towards reducing its production time by reacting rapidly to the needs through ready input materials available in stock for the production. On the other side, suppliers of ICA AB are responsible for keeping essential resources for production by their own.
