There is no doubt of leaders’ existence and profound contribution in developing human civilization. History is littered with stories of many great leaders. Some are recognized for their dexterity in the battlefields, some perhaps for their business acumen or for inspiration for their employees.

Whatever the reasons for fame, humans have recognized that the capability of an individual to make others take action and achieve goals makes them stand out in society. However, the question still remains - what is it that makes them different?

Hence the purpose of this theoretical paper is to provide a review of the definition of leadership and of the three main theories of leadership, namely Trait, Behaviour, and Contingency Theory. The author then chooses a particular focus on Contingency Theory, which is analysed further.

Research Objectives and Core Themes

This paper aims to provide a comprehensive review of leadership definitions while critically examining three primary leadership theories: Trait, Behaviour, and Contingency theory. By focusing specifically on the Path-Goal model, the author seeks to demonstrate its pragmatic utility in the modern, rapidly changing business environment, ultimately evaluating how different leadership styles can be adapted to specific situational demands and follower needs.

  • Review and definition of fundamental leadership concepts.
  • Comparative analysis of Trait, Behaviour, and Contingency leadership theories.
  • Critical examination of the Path-Goal model as a situational approach.
  • Evaluation of how leadership behaviors impact follower motivation and performance.
  • Synthesis of practical leadership applications in contemporary organizations.

Excerpt from the Book

Path-Goal model:

The path-goal model was developed by Martin G. Evans (1970) and later it was modified by Robert House (1971) and which focuses how a leader creates a process for his/her followers to become self-motivated and achieve the goal. This is the extended theory of Vroom’s expectancy3 motivational theory and Fiedler’s contingency 4model (Afsaneh, 2015; Vroom, 1964; cited in Yukl, 2010). The path-goal model considers the personal characteristic and situational control which means it is based on a situation like contingency theory rather than on an especially one leadership style like behavior or traits (Owens, 1973).

The Author of this paper believes that path-goal leadership model can help an effective leader to motivate her/his subordinate through (1) clarifying and training his/her subordinate about the work and how to achieve the ultimate goal and (2) arranging reward system after a goal attainment (House, 1971; cited in Yukl, 2010; Northouse, 2013) (Picture:1).
