The Origins of the Blitzkrieg is a brief examination of the evolution of strategy and tactics that paved the way to one of the most successful styled campaigns in warfare. Popularly employed to devastating success in the Second World War, Blitzkrieg's history simply did not begin from the thinkers of the interwar period, its origins stem even further back.

An extremely likely outcome during an era when both sides of the conflict struggled initially to make sense of new advanced weapons of war. This paper not only briefly examines the struggle of the Central Powers and Allies in trying to reconcile the many stalemates of the war, but also outlining coupled with analysis of the very foundations of what would later be pieced together in its totality as lightning war.

Objectives & Research Focus

The primary objective of this work is to investigate the historical origins of the "blitzkrieg" doctrine, arguing that its foundations are not a revolutionary product of the Second World War, but rather an evolutionary development rooted in the tactical innovations of the First World War. The research seeks to trace how initial infiltration tactics, storm trooper operations, and the early introduction of combined arms evolved to address the stalemate of trench warfare.

  • Analysis of German infiltration tactics during the First World War.
  • Examination of the role of "Storm Troopers" and decentralized command structures.
  • Evaluation of the influence of early tank warfare and British tactical developments.
  • Tracing the transition from defensive breakthrough tactics to the broader blitzkrieg concept.

Excerpt from the Book

The Origins of Blitzkrieg

“Even now, at the start of the twenty-first century for all our advances we still haven’t eliminated the scourge of war… In fact in the last hundred years [we] have seen war waged on a greater scale than in any other time in history.” Though these words capture a glimpse of warfare in this new modern era, they only scratch the surface of the efforts that were conducted that sparked radical evolution in warfare to take place. An evolution that began about a century ago, the advancements in warfare brought about greater improvement in the effectiveness and efficiency of waging war. Dubbed the war to end all wars, the Great War or the First World War was, at the commencement of the twentieth century, the most destructive war the world had ever seen. Never before in history had such a greater death toll been achieved through the use of millions of troops who adapted newer battle tactics that were the product of the merging of older methods of warfare and fresh technological developments. This war set the stage on the way commanders would utilize technology and weapon systems to dictate how battles would be fought up until this very day.
