This paper assesses the trends, causes, and costs of road traffic accidents in Ethiopia. Despite efforts made by various stakeholders to reduce the massacre on Ethiopian roads, road traffic accidents have been a serious health development issue in the country. The essay used data on road traffic accidents in Ethiopia for the period 2006 –2015.
Data were obtained from Federal Police Commission and Federal Road Authority and analyzed using descriptive statistics. The study found that at national level, on average road traffic injuries are increasing from year to year where Oromia regional state is the major contributor of total fatalities occurred in the past decade. On the other hand, Addis Ababa city administration is found as a major contributor of serious and slight injuries as well as property damages. The study showed that alike any developing countries, pedestrians and passengers are found to be the most vulnerable and hardest hit segment of road users. The finding also showed that male road users who are in their productive age group are disproportionately affected by road traffic injuries. Human errors (mainly drivers’ behavior and actions) are found as the major cause of road traffic accident in Ethiopia. So as to reduce fatalities and injuries on Ethiopian roads, the essay recommends that road safety policy and law enforcement; capacity building, education, and awareness creation; and cooperation and integration between and/or among all transport stakeholders should be the focus of Ethiopian government.

Zusammenfassung der Kapitel (Chapter Summaries)
1. Introduction: This chapter sets the stage by highlighting the global problem of road traffic accidents and their devastating impact, emphasizing the disproportionate burden on low- and middle-income countries like Ethiopia. It cites alarming statistics from the World Health Organization (WHO), demonstrating the scale of the issue and its socioeconomic consequences. The introduction effectively establishes the context and urgency for addressing road traffic accidents in Ethiopia, setting the framework for the subsequent analysis. Specific examples are given about the global death toll and the percentage of deaths that occur in low-and-middle-income countries.
2. Statement of the Problem: This section details the severity of road traffic accidents as a public health and developmental challenge within Ethiopia. It underscores the human cost—both direct fatalities and injuries and indirect effects on families and the national economy—due to accidents. The chapter emphasizes the urgent need for effective interventions and data-driven analysis to address the escalating problem, highlighting that the scale and severity are increasing.
8. Results and Discussion: This chapter presents the findings of the study. It analyzes trends in road traffic accidents in Ethiopia, categorizing accidents by type (fatal, serious injury, slight injury, property damage), examining variations based on gender, age, and vehicle type, and identifying regional disparities. The detailed breakdown reveals patterns and critical insights into the characteristics and distribution of road traffic accidents across the country. Oromia is found to be the major contributor to fatalities, while Addis Ababa contributes most to injuries and property damage.
9. Cause of Road Traffic Accident: This section delves into the root causes of road traffic accidents in Ethiopia. It shows that while various contributing factors can play a role, human error (primarily drivers' behaviors and actions) stands out as the primary cause. The chapter may also touch upon other factors, and it likely provides a systemic understanding of the problem, going beyond individual driver responsibility to include infrastructural, regulatory, and societal factors.
10. Cost of Road Traffic Accident in Ethiopia: This chapter quantifies the economic burden imposed by road traffic accidents on Ethiopia. It evaluates direct costs (medical expenses, property damage) and indirect costs (lost productivity, reduced economic growth). The data presented illustrates the significant economic impact of accidents, underscoring the need for efficient resource allocation to road safety measures. The focus would be on the high economic cost of the issue, placing this cost into the context of Ethiopian economic development.
11. Number of Cars and Road Traffic Accidents in Regions: This section investigates the correlation between the number of vehicles and the incidence of road traffic accidents across different regions in Ethiopia. The analysis of this relationship could reveal areas where motorization growth outpaces road safety infrastructure or where regulatory and enforcement measures are insufficient. This allows for a regional level analysis of the issues and potential for regional variations in the impact of road traffic accidents.
