Research Objectives and Themes

This paper examines whether a singular British national identity existed during the 1990s or if music served as a fractured expression of multiple identities. By analyzing the cultural landscape of the decade, the work explores how popular music, media, and social discourse shaped the perception of Britishness and Englishness.

  • The role of pop music as a tool for national and social identification.
  • The emergence and cultural impact of the Britpop movement.
  • The socio-political significance of the "North vs. South" divide within the music industry.
  • The influence of media, celebrity, and political shifts (New Labour) on national identity.

Excerpt from the Book

2.4 Mixing everything: The Prodigy

The base of all sounds in the modern world ist he electronic genre. Electronic music os a modern music that matched the modern atmosphere. Even hip hop developped itself out oft he electro scene. Today hip hop is known all around the planet but back in the nineties and even back in the eighties hip hap was not that famous. It was the most extreme development. The hip hop genre had starte das an underground movement and raised tot he biggest music business in the modern world with its centre in the USA. The scene in the USA influences all other hip hop scenes around the world. This fact makes it not surprising that hip hop did not take a leading role in music history in the 1990s. But another genre - or in other words another band – affected the musical world more than anyone ever. The Prodigy was the biggest surprise of the decade. They mixed electro beats with the power of rock. The Prodigy finally destroyed all musical barriers. They were as revolutionary as no other band could have been.
