Abstract or Introduction

To determine the optimal facility layout for any kind of company is a very tough task the operations manager (or founder him-/herself) has to tackle. However such tasks base on the same assumptions and functioning, a whole academic discipline arose since its importance was recognized in the late 1980s. Questions like the optimal decision making process, capacity considerations, scale effects or the best facility location between other production centers and the distributions centers within (bigger) cities are covered in this text. Especially for those who are interested in founding their own business, this text can be very helpful and interesting. It isn't only about the layout for steel companies, even modern service providers have to follow an optimal layout, called job shop, which can be optimized in the most cases. Many examples, images & figures as well as step-by-step calculations are performed to enable even “math strangers” to follow and align them to their own individual situation.
