Excerpt from the Book

ISSUE 1: Public Speaking Anxiety

According to McCrowskey and Richmond (1989), public speaking anxiety is prevalent throughout society. Out of many thousands of university students who undertook the PRPSA scale, twenty percent exhibited moderate anxiety, five percent reported low anxiety, and about forty percent reported high anxiety about public speaking (McCrowskey & Richmond, 1989).

In order to comprehend public speaking anxiety, we must recognize that it is distinct forms of anxieties. According to the conclusions of Burgoon and Hale (1983), "anxiety about oral performance is separate from anxiety about and willingness to be involved in face to face encounters". According to Ayers (1986), "While communication reticence has common features that are cross-situational, it has particular characteristics that are associated with particular situations". Glazer (1981) indicates that "Clearly, there are differences between stage fright, or public speaking anxiety, and a more generalized, cross situational fear and avoidance of oral communication".

Several deductions have been formulated to explain the nature of public speaking anxiety. These include conditioning (McCroskey, 1984), skills deficits (Phillips & Metzger, 1973), cognitive structures (Leary, 1983), assimilation theory perspective (Beatty & Behnke, 1980) and cognitive-physiological factors (Behnke & Beatty, 1981).

The skills deficit explanation proposes that that anxiety rises in a person due to inadequate required communication skills to complete the goal of passing across the message. According to McCroskey's (1984) conditioning theory, individuals are anxious in communication surroundings as considerably neutral communication is deemed to contain aversive outcomes. Leary (1983) asserts that people feel anxious because of the way they think of themselves in the communication setting. For instance, one’s cognitive assumption of them that they aren’t physically attractive enough is likely to generate more anxiety when one is put in an oral performance setting where the audience’s focus is on them.
