Pregnancy and childbirth phenomena are considered to be among the most fundamental issues in one’s life. These are the early stages of life and, they seem to be delicate and difficult to manage. Currently, there are a number of sophisticated medical procedures, which appear to have eliminated pain and increased the safety of the mother and child. In the past, pregnancy and delivery were some of the most painful ordeals to women and, could result into death at times, owing to pregnancy complications.

As a result, healthcare professionals in public and private healthcare facilities are currently administering heavy drug doses to pregnant mothers, especially during delivery to hasten labor and suppress pain. However, they have adopted this new approach to evade lawsuits related to the medical ethics, in case they perform delivery with fatal outcome. Alternatively, homeopathy has currently emerged as the most appropriate approach towards addressing the enormous health challenges associated with conventional medical procedures. Therefore, this research will give an overview of homeopathy and its relevance in pregnancy, childbirth and after parturition.

Excerpt from the book

Homeopathic Medicines for Morning Sickness

Morning sickness is usually a normal biological process but, not a sickness; although its manifestations are, more or less similar to those of some disease conditions. Nausea is believed to be one of the most popular signs of morning sickness. Others include mood swings, allergic reactions from the surrounding environment, vomiting, diarrhea and polyphagia. Episodes of loss of sleep are also experienced by pregnant women, especially during the early stages of pregnancy (Schmukler, 2003). These conditions can be relieved with homeopathic remedies for pleasant healthy feeling during pregnancy.

Some of the homeopathic medicines, which are useful in relieving the effects of morning sickness, include Anacardium, Cocculus, Colchicum, Pulsatilla, Veratrum alb and Symphoricarpus. Anacardium relieves nausea and vomiting, whereas Cocculus and Pulsatilla relieve excessive salivation and mood swings respectively. Symphoricarpus and Veratrum alb are useful remedies for constipation and vomiting with diarrhea (Tayler, 2007).

However, it is worth noting that the symptoms, upon which these medicines are administered, are relatively different. For instance, Anacardium, Nux Vomica, Ipecac, Symphoricarpus and Pulsatilla are reliable remedies for morning sickness, especially when the woman is experiencing nausea conditions but, the nature of the condition determines the most appropriate medicines to be administered to the pregnant woman. Pulsatilla is usually suitable for pregnant women weepy and needy, whereas Nux Vomica is preferable for pregnant women who display anger and irritability (Hugall, 2004).
