This research is on victim’s perception of gully erosion in Edo State, Nigeria. The primary objective was to evaluate how victims understand causes, effects of gully erosion and effectiveness of erosion control measures in the study area. The research used questionnaire as a tool to examine victims perception of gully erosion in the area. Out of 480 questionnaire administered, 454 were returned and they were used for the analyses.
Based on the findings of this study, victims of gully erosion in the area attributed causes to poor construction of culverts, deforestation and termination of drainages in sloppy topography. They agree that gully erosion in the area has resulted to losses of human lives, losses of buildings, displacement of people and losses of productive land. Victims also confirmed damages of infrastructures such as roads, bridges, buildings and altering of transportation corridors. Their responses revealed that gully erosion has resulted to decreased species richness, slowed succession and declining agricultural productivity which means less vegetation cover to soil, less return of organic matter and less biological and nutrient activity.

Zusammenfassung der Kapitel (Chapter Summaries)
Abstract: This research investigates the perceptions of gully erosion victims in Edo State, Nigeria, focusing on their understanding of the causes and effects of erosion and the effectiveness of control measures. A questionnaire was used to gather data from 454 respondents, revealing that victims attribute the causes to poor culvert construction, deforestation, and disrupted drainage systems. The consequences include loss of life, property damage, displacement, and decreased agricultural productivity.
Introduction: This chapter provides background information on soil erosion research, highlighting the gap in understanding people's perceptions of the socio-economic consequences of gully erosion. It emphasizes the need for attitudinal changes among the public and increased community participation in effective erosion control. The chapter also notes the lack of success of existing control measures, motivating the current research.
Study Area Description: This section details the geographical, geological, and climatic features of Edo State, Nigeria, the study area. It describes the state's location, geology (predominantly sedimentary rocks), relief (swamps, plateaus, and dissected uplands), climate (humid subtropical with distinct wet and dry seasons), and vegetation (rainforests, savannas, and farmlands). The chapter also covers the state's demographics, economy (largely agricultural), and prevalent environmental problems, with flooding and erosion being major concerns.
Methodology: The research employed questionnaires administered to 454 respondents within a 5km radius of selected gully sites using purposive sampling to focus on directly affected individuals. The questionnaire gathered information on respondents' characteristics, perceptions of erosion causes, and evaluations of control measures and community participation levels. A total of 480 questionnaires were distributed, with 454 returned and used in the analysis.
Results and Discussion: This chapter presents and analyzes data on respondent demographics and perceptions. Specifically, it provides age distribution data for respondents in Edo North and Edo South, illustrating the age range of those impacted by gully erosion. Further analysis would delve into other collected data about causes, effects, and perceived effectiveness of control measures.
