Excerpt from the Book

The Wholistic Difference

It is worth-noting that, wholistic medicine not only tries to view every individual with a medical problem as a unique individual, but it also tries to relate any disorder to particular psychological and behavioural information. Several factors should be taken into consideration in ensuring wholistic difference in health care or healing.

Firstly, wholistic healthcare should take very seriously the relationship between the patient and the health care specialist. The doctor and patient must spend time getting to know each other better. When trust and care flows both ways, there will be effective diagnosis and treatment.

Secondly, wholistic medicine recognizes the role of stress in life and its interaction with a perceived illness. Any diagnosis of a disease should take into account the stress level of the patient; else the diagnosis and subsequent treatments will be invalid and incomplete. This is because, after the diagnosis, the people will return to the same environment or lifestyle that created the symptoms in the same place.

Thirdly, wholistic approach to the healing process also views medicine as just an aspect of health care. Health should not be seen merely as a subspecialty of medicine. However, a variety of other health care professionals may deal with a patient’s needs only as defined by a physician’s diagnosis. Physicians should work alongside other health care providers such as pastoral counsellors who would help the patient with prevention, lifestyle modification, psychological counselling, and general support. This is the main reason why the church should enter into wholistic medicine or healthcare.
