In practice, evidence-based practice helps in developing appropriate control and prevention measures of infectious diseases. However, effective intervention relies on an informed understanding of the chain of infection. This is a paramount aspect in professional nursing because it facilitates nursing management of a given condition with the focus of breaking the chain through treatment and nursing management interventions.

Research Objectives and Themes

This work aims to explore the professional nursing management of tuberculosis by grounding clinical interventions in an evidence-based understanding of the chain of infection. The core research focus is on how nurses can effectively disrupt the transmission cycle and improve patient outcomes through pharmacological adherence and targeted health education.

  • Pathophysiology and transmission dynamics of Mycobacterium tuberculosis.
  • Clinical treatment regimens for pulmonary and extrapulmonary tuberculosis.
  • The critical role of professional nurses in patient advocacy and treatment adherence.
  • Evidence-based nursing interventions for infection control and patient education.
  • Management strategies for multi-drug resistant (MDR) tuberculosis.

Excerpt from the Book

Evidence-based Practice Nursing Intervention

The first nursing intervention is reviewing the pathology of tuberculosis, in order to gain an overview of TB progression and spread of infection. The rationale for this intervention is to facilitate adherence to TB treatment by the patient. The patient is able to understand the importance of adhering to treatment, in order to prevent complications associated to TB management including drug-resistance or reactivation (Vera, 2013). In addition, this intervention will help the patient adopt appropriate measures to prevent the spread of TB to other people after gaining knowledge on transmission.

The second nursing intervention is to identify other people who may be exposed to the risk of TB infection. For instance, this process can involve family members and friends or close associates. The rationale for this intervention is to prevent the spread of infection, especially to household members.

Third, a review of proper waste disposal and hygiene is necessary to prevent behaviors that promote the spread of tuberculosis. For instance, the patient can be instructed to follow high hygienic standards such as hand washing, and observing caution when sneezing, coughing, or even laughing. The patient should be taught on how to cough expectorate into a tissue for disposal. In addition, the patient should be instructed to refrain from spitting, in order to prevent the spread of TB infection (Vera, 2013).

Chapter Summaries

Introduction: This chapter establishes the importance of evidence-based practice in nursing and introduces the fundamental concept of the chain of infection as a framework for disease control.

Elements in the chain of infection of tuberculosis: This section details the six components of the tuberculosis infection cycle, ranging from the infectious agent (M. tuberculosis) to the susceptible host.

Nursing Management of Tuberculosis: This chapter covers clinical treatment protocols and the essential role nurses play in ensuring patient adherence and implementing specific, evidence-based interventions to prevent further spread.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the core focus of this publication?

The document focuses on the nursing management of tuberculosis, specifically how understanding the chain of infection allows for more effective patient care and public health intervention.

What are the primary themes discussed?

Key themes include the biological characteristics of M. tuberculosis, modes of transmission, pharmaceutical treatment options, and the practical application of evidence-based nursing interventions.

What is the ultimate goal of the research presented?

The primary goal is to provide a comprehensive overview of how professional nursing can disrupt the tuberculosis infection chain through accurate identification, treatment support, and patient education.

What scientific approach is utilized?

The work utilizes a clinical review approach, integrating established bacteriological facts with nursing care strategies and established evidence-based practice guidelines.

What is the focus of the main content?

The main content is divided into the mechanics of the chain of infection and the practical, day-to-day nursing interventions required to manage TB patients effectively.

Which keywords define this work?

Important keywords include Mycobacterium tuberculosis, infection control, nursing management, treatment adherence, and evidence-based practice.

How does TB transmission influence nursing care?

Because TB is an airborne disease, nurses must focus on patient education regarding respiratory hygiene, the identification of exposed contacts, and the strict supervision of drug regimens.

Why is latent tuberculosis a specific concern for nurses?

Nurses must be aware that patients with latent TB require evaluation for prophylaxis, especially if they are immunosuppressed, to prevent the reactivation of the bacteria.

How do nurses address drug resistance?

Nurses prevent the development of multi-drug resistant (MDR) strains by ensuring patient adherence to long-term regimens and using directly-observed therapy when necessary.
