Zusammenfassung Leseprobe Details

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is seemingly becoming an immense challenge to the public health system. According to epidemiological reports, CVD has become the leading cause of disability and death worldwide, and it accounts for more than 2 million deaths in the United States. Over the past decade, the prevalence and incidence rates of CVD have been taking upward trends with stroke and heart disease being the most prevalent worldwide. In the US, it is estimated that 71.3 million adults are having one or more types of cardiovascular disease (Mensah & Brown, 2007). Therefore, this paper aims at providing a comprehensive epidemiological overview of CVD and design appropriate management and mitigation approaches that are suitable for local communities in addressing the disease.

Objectives and Research Themes

This paper aims to provide a comprehensive epidemiological overview of cardiovascular disease (CVD) to identify its primary risk factors and propose actionable management and mitigation strategies for local community health improvement.

  • Epidemiological analysis of CVD prevalence and mortality rates.
  • Identification of modifiable risk factors including diet, obesity, and physical inactivity.
  • Evaluation of policy-based and clinical intervention strategies.
  • Development of community-specific protocols for health dissemination and disease mitigation.

Excerpt from the Book

Obesity (fatness)

Moreover, fatness has also been found to be among the leading causes of CVD. Obesity has become a challenge to public health systems, especially in the Western countries. For instance, it is estimated that over 75% of the adult population in the United States is either obese or overweight. From an epidemiological perspective, obesity is associated with abnormal distribution of adipose tissue. Therefore, fatness facilitates the formation of fatty plaques in the blood vessels. This implies that obese, as well as overweight people have an increased risk of CVD. This is probably the reason why regions with high obesity rates are recording the highest CVD mortality. Results of the Lipid Research Clinics Study showed that fatness increases CVD mortality (Stevens, Cai, Evenson & Thomas, 2002).

Summary of Chapters

Introduction: Outlines the growing public health challenge of cardiovascular disease and sets the scope for an epidemiological overview and mitigation strategy.

Major Causes of CVD: Explores the physiological and lifestyle drivers of the disease, including glucose intolerance, dietary habits, obesity, and sedentary lifestyles.

Key Steps in Addressing CVD: Discusses current governmental and medical approaches, focusing on both therapeutic medication and broader public policy changes.

Leading Questions for Local Health Department in Mitigating the Proliferation of CVD: Provides a structured framework of inquiries to guide health departments in evaluating community-specific risk factors.

Protocol for Disseminating CVD Information: Proposes a communication strategy utilizing health forums to engage community leaders in disease mitigation efforts.

CVD of Mitigation Steps in Nursing Home Environment: Offers specific clinical and lifestyle recommendations tailored to the nursing home setting to prevent disease progression among the elderly.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the fundamental focus of this paper?

The paper provides a comprehensive epidemiological analysis of cardiovascular disease and outlines strategies to mitigate its prevalence within local communities.

Which central themes are explored?

The work covers risk factors like diet, obesity, and physical inactivity, as well as institutional policy interventions and nursing home management.

What is the primary goal of the study?

The goal is to link epidemiological findings to practical, community-based management and mitigation approaches to reduce CVD mortality.

What methodology does the author employ?

The author utilizes a review of existing clinical epidemiological studies, cohort data, and evidence-based health policy recommendations.

What topics are covered in the main body?

The body addresses specific causes of CVD, the role of public health departments in disease surveillance, and actionable protocols for health dissemination.

Which keywords characterize this work?

Key terms include cardiovascular disease, epidemiology, obesity, physical activity, health policy, and disease prevention.

How does glucose intolerance affect CVD risk according to the text?

The text highlights that studies, such as the Funagata diabetes study, identify impaired glucose tolerance as a significant independent risk factor for developing CVD.

What specific interventions are suggested for nursing home environments?

Recommendations include regular blood pressure monitoring, blood glucose and cholesterol testing, weight management programs, and promoting physical activity.
