The city comedy "A Chaste Maid in Cheapside" was written by Thomas Middleton in 1613 and published in quarto in 1630. It is situated in Cheapside, the main market square in London then. The story consists of several plots that develop around the constituent families and cross in the course of the play.

In this work, I explore a part of Renaissance London. With the help of Thomas Middleton’s play "A Chaste Maid in Cheapside", published in 1630, I investigate the gender role of the main character Moll, who is also the “chaste maid”. I draw attention to the questions: How is “the chaste maid” represented? What is her role within the social systems of family, lover and arranged marriage partner? How is Moll an example for women’s positions between gender and social roles within society? I argue that Moll’s role shows a clear example of how women were treated unequally and how they had less rights than men. When analyzing the woman’s role within society, I consult secondary sources that examine the image of women and gender during that time so that the satire of the play can be understood accordingly.

Objectives & Themes

This paper explores the representation of gender roles in Renaissance London by analyzing Thomas Middleton's 1630 play, "A Chaste Maid in Cheapside." The primary research question focuses on how the protagonist, Moll, navigates the social systems of family, lovers, and arranged marriage, ultimately arguing that her role exemplifies the systemic inequality and limited rights afforded to women of the period.

  • Analysis of women's status within the Renaissance family structure.
  • Examination of the "city comedy" genre and its satirical portrayal of social reality.
  • Evaluation of gender power dynamics in arranged marriages vs. chosen relationships.
  • Interpretation of Moll as a representative figure for women's lack of agency in early modern society.

Excerpt from the Book

The Role within Her Family

The play starts off with a dispute of mother Maudline and her daughter Moll. Maudline disapproves of her daughter not having a partner in good prospects and not being pregnant yet. This makes clear that Moll is the chaste maid of the title. While Maudline’s parts of speech are significantly longer, the daughter only gives short answers which prove the inferior role status in their relationship. The “lecture” of how sexually active Maudline was at Moll’s age comes with insults that depict Moll as sexually incapable (1.1.17-20). When Moll’s father comes in and tries to soothe Maudline, she reveals her expectations of a young lady like her daughter: “But ‘tis a husband solders up all cracks” (1.1.31): Maudline expects Moll to follow the tradition of starting a family at a certain age. At least, she expects her to find someone to “solder up her crack” in a more physical way. It quickly becomes clear the parents want their daughter to jump into the game of sex and marriage. This is because “[t]he supreme vocation of early modern woman [sic] was to bear children, ensuring the continuity of a family and its inheritance” (Hebron 119).
