Health care delivery systems and financing structures are some of the most popular across the globe when it comes to the wellbeing of the human race. The resultant popularity is influenced by the significance of universal healthcare and the efficiency levels attributed to healthcare delivery, financing, and accessibility, among other factors. All countries are inherently predisposed to have unique healthcare financing and delivery systems due to assorted issues such as political history, culture, economic, and demographic factors. In particular, health care in the United Kingdom and the United States has been at the centre of political, social, and cultural debate in the past few years.

Excerpt from the Book

3.1 Cost

According to the World Health Organisation, the US healthcare expenditure was about 17.8% of the total GDP in 2016 translates to $3.2 trillion. Per capita expenditure in 2014 was established as $8,054. It was projected that this would increase to 19% by 2017 while the healthcare per capita cost to $9,990 (Squires, 2011). The expenditure in 2016 indicates that the national health cost was over 3.3 trillion. Health spending by major source of funds indicates that the government through Medicare and Medicaid spend 20% and 17%, respectively, which translate to $672.1 billion in 2016 and $565.5 billion, respectively. Private health insurance spent 34% of the total expenditure, which translates to $1.1 trillion in 2016. Lastly, the out-of-pocket expenditure was 11% or 352.5 billion in the same year. In the United Kingdom, the NHS was 98.8% from the national insurance along with taxation (Squires, 2011). Particularly, the UK spends about 9.8% of its GDP on the healthcare, which is equivalent to £138 billion annually. It is estimated that the NHS spends about £2009 per person throughout the UK. In England, the costs translate to £1,992 per person, Wales £1,1998 per individual, while in Scotland and Northern Ireland £2,150 and £2,115 per person.
