Resumen Extracto de texto Detalles

This paper deals with the question why there are so few women in leadership positions with the S&P 500 and what the implications thereupon are. I identified two umbrella terms, which are on the one hand self-effacement of women to aim that high
out of personal reasons, and on the other hand a pipeline that is blocked with men and hinders women from climbing the ladder. With these as foundation, I will then examine the phenomenon of the celebrity CEO and women in the spotlight. The focus of the
second main chapter will lie on two case studies, based on the former findings, and for this purpose I will elaborate on Sheryl Sandberg, COO of Facebook, and Marissa Mayer, CEO of Yahoo.

Excerpt from the Book

2.1 Self-Effacement: The Emergence of a Leadership Ambition Gap

The main consideration why women tend to hold back in matters of ascending the professional ladder is about family life. Even though this is the twenty-first century, women are still traditionally considered to be responsible for taking care of the children while men are the primary breadwinners. Studies show that in more than 75% of US families, the father is the main breadwinner and of the 20% families with stay-at-home mothers, 85% of the mothers name taking care of their families as the main reason for not staying in the workforce (cf. Yadoo, bloomberg.com). These numbers suggest that “[...] there are still some age old cultural habits that won’t die” (Marks, forbes.com). Anne-Marie Slaughter claims on that account that “[m]en are still socialized to believe that their primary family obligation is to be the breadwinner; women, to believe that their primary family obligation is to be the caregiver” (theatlantic.com). This implies that there are still social pressures and obligations that cause women to step back in their careers or even drop out of the workforce in favor of their families. Sheryl Sandberg states that a certain number of young women even start to make adjustments to their career plans for the benefit of children that do not exist yet (cf. 8), which she calls to leave before one leaves (cf. 93). This shows that women are willing to and even expected by society to prioritize family over a career and make adjustments accordingly from a very young age, while men are expected to do it the other way around and have a career as their top priority.
