Excerpt from the Book

4 THE SOCIAL CREDIT SYSTEM AND ITS IMPLEMENTATION

The rise of Big Data in the digital era is not really surprising as the use of the Internet for social and business purposes generates vast amounts of data as well as possibilities for new methods of data collection, processing and storage. According to the Cambridge Dictionary, Big Data is defined as very large sets of data that are produced by people using the internet, and that can only be stored, understood, and used with the help of special tools and methods.

The Chinese government, which is led by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) in a one-party system, is eagerly embracing Big Data and invests heavily in technology which can be used to assist in the creation and implementation of a reputation system under the catchphrase of the Social Credit System in order to monitor, rate, and regulate the behaviour of citizens and companies through incentives of punishment and reward.

Summary of Chapters

1 INTRODUCTION: This chapter highlights the challenges of a globalised world and introduces the Chinese Social Credit System as a response to the need for effective leadership in the digital age.

2 DEFINITION OF LEADERSHIP AND LEADERSHIP THEORIES: This chapter provides a theoretical framework by examining four main leadership approaches: Trait, Skills, Behavioural, and Situational.

2.1 TRAIT APPROACH: This section discusses the theory that leaders possess innate qualities that distinguish them from their followers, referencing models like the Five Factor Model.

2.2 SKILLS APPROACH: This section focuses on leadership as a learned process based on three core areas: technical, human, and conceptual skills.

2.3 BEHAVIOURAL APPROACH: This section explains how task-oriented and relationship-oriented behaviours define a leader, using the Blake/Mouton leadership grid.

2.4 SITUATIONAL APPROACH: This section introduces the model by Hersey and Blanchard, emphasizing the need to adapt leadership styles based on the competence and commitment of subordinates.

3 GENERAL FACTS ON CHINA: This chapter provides a demographic and economic overview of China, situating the country as a major global power.

4 THE SOCIAL CREDIT SYSTEM AND ITS IMPLEMENTATION: This chapter explains the integration of Big Data into a state-run reputation system designed to incentivize compliance and monitor social conduct.

5 ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF THE SOCIAL CREDIT SYSTEM: This chapter critically analyzes the societal impacts of the system, weighing the potential for increased trustworthiness against concerns over civil liberties and surveillance.

6 CONCLUSION: This chapter summarizes the findings and notes that while the system could solve social problems under responsible leadership, it poses significant risks for civil liberties if misused.
