Resumen Extracto de texto Detalles

The western world has always been fascinated with the lifestyle of the wealthy. Affluenza in simple words can be defined as the painful, contagious and socially transmitted need to purchase more in order to gain status and happiness. It describes the extreme materialism and consumerism associated with the pursuit of wealth and success, often resulting in a life of chronic dissatisfaction, debt, overwork, stress and impaired relationships. It has also been used to refer to an inability to understand the consequences of one's actions because of financial privilege. The term was invented by critics of consumerism in the United States of America, derived from the words 'influenza' and 'affluence'.

Excerpt from the Book

Affluenza in the Developed World: An Unhealthy Fascination with Wealth

The western world has always been fascinated with the lifestyle of the wealthy. Affluenza in simple words can be defined as the painful, contagious and socially transmitted need to purchase more in order to gain status and happiness. It describes the extreme materialism and consumerism associated with the pursuit of wealth and success, often resulting in a life of chronic dissatisfaction, debt, overwork, stress and impaired relationships (Merriam-Webster, 2017). It has also been used to refer to an inability to understand the consequences of one's actions because of financial privilege. The term was invented by critics of consumerism in the United States of America, derived from the words 'influenza' and 'affluence'.

Strongly advertised inventions create new needs for diverse products. For example nowadays one might have a facial creme for the night as well as one for the day, while the main ingredients basically stay the same. One product could most probably be used for both purposes, which is one factor that leads to a so-called consumer mania. Another symptom of Affluenza is the addictive virus that spending money for material items withholds, additional to the aspect of never having enough. According to researchers, compulsive buyers often feel heigtened sensations when they shop. It is often a way to cope with anxiety, loneliness and a low self-esteem. Overconsumption is considered to have raised to a dominant trait of western culture - having the 'right' kind of material products to make the 'right' kind of impression to other ones seems to reassure addictive buyers.
