This study determined the extent of challenges faced by fisherfolks in Vigan City which include socio-economic, personal, and environmental variations. Further, it aimed to determine the significant relationship between challenges faced by fisherfolks and their profile.
The profile of the respondent was also described which include sex, age, civil status, number of children, monthly income, educational attainment, type of residence, affiliated organization, training attended, and other source of income. Fisherfolks who were residing in Vigan City, particularly in Mindoro and San Pedro were taken as the respondents of this study.
The descriptive-correlational method of research with questionnaire as the main tool for gathering data was used in this study. The questionnaire was constructed by the researchers based from their readings and was content validated by knowledgeable persons along the field. Purposive sampling was used to identify the 70 respondents. Frequency, percentage, mean and simple correlation analysis were used to treat the data gathered.
All of the respondents are male, attained training in local, affiliated in Fishermen’s organization, and resided in their own house. Majority of the respondents are 30-39 years old, and most of them are married. Many of the respondents are High School level, earn up to Php 4000- Php 6999 as monthly income. As their other source of income, most of the respondents are involved in farming.
Overall, challenges in terms socio-economic, personal, and environmental variations are actually bringing difficulties among the fisherfolks in their fishing activities. There is no significant relationship between the extent of challenges faced by fisherfolks and their profile.

Objectives and Core Topics
This thesis aims to determine the extent of challenges encountered by fisherfolks in Vigan City, specifically categorizing these into socio-economic, personal, and environmental variations, while examining whether a significant relationship exists between these challenges and the demographic profile of the respondents.
- Socio-economic challenges affecting fishing operations and livelihood
- Personal difficulties and technical knowledge gaps among fisherfolks
- Impact of environmental variations on fishing resources and equipment
- Correlation between demographic profiles (age, income, etc.) and perceived challenges
- Policy and program recommendations for local government support
Excerpt from the Book
Environmental Variations
Fisheries and fisher folk may get affected in a wide range of ways by environmental variations. The distribution or productivity of marine and fresh water fish stocks might be affected owing to the processes such as ocean acidification, habitat damage, changes in oceanography, disruption to precipitation and freshwater availability (Daw, 2009).
Barange and Perry (2009) said that environmental variation, in particular, rising temperatures, can have both direct and indirect effects on global fish production. With increased global temperature, the spatial distribution of fish stocks might change due to the migration of fishes from one region to another in search of suitable conditions. Environmental variation will have major consequences for population dynamics of marine biota via changes in transport processes that influence dispersals and recruitment. The effects of increasing temperature on marine and freshwater ecosystems are already evident, with rapid pole ward shifts in distributions of fish and plankton in regions such as North East Atlantic, where temperature change has been rapid (Brander, 2007). Environmental variation has been implicated in mass mortalities of many aquatic species, including plants, fish, corals, and mammals (Harvell et al., 1999; Battin et al., 2007).
Small-scale fisheries and small-scale aquaculture are particularly vulnerable to environmental variation. Their vulnerability is a result of both their geographical location as well as their poverty situation. Being located at the waterfront, fishing and fish farming communities are exposed to climate related extreme events and natural hazards, such as hurricanes, cyclones, sea level rise, ocean acidification, floods and coastal erosion. Millions of people living in coastal and food plain lowlands are unable to escape regular flooding. As environmental variation impacts are harming human and natural systems including infrastructures, disturbing fish stocks, eroding natural resources and endangering species and ecosystem. These impacts also reduce resilience. Environmental variation is therefore a threat to human health, well-being and livelihoods (Barange, Bahri, 2018).

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the core focus of this research study?
The study focuses on identifying and analyzing the various challenges encountered by fisherfolks residing in Vigan City, specifically in the areas of San Pedro and Mindoro.
What are the three main categories of challenges identified?
The challenges are categorized into three domains: socio-economic issues, personal challenges, and environmental variations.
What is the primary research goal of this study?
The primary goal is to determine the extent of these challenges and to investigate if there is a significant statistical relationship between the demographic profile of the fisherfolks and the challenges they face.
Which research methodology was utilized?
The researchers employed a descriptive-correlational research design, utilizing a survey questionnaire to collect data from 70 purposively sampled respondents.
What does the main body of the work cover?
The main body details the demographic profile of the respondents, provides mean ratings for specific challenges, and uses correlational analysis to test the hypothesis regarding the relationship between profiles and challenges.
Which keywords characterize this thesis?
Key terms include Fisherfolks, Vigan City, socio-economic challenges, environmental variations, and fishing livelihood.
Did the study find a significant relationship between demographic profiles and challenges?
No, the study concluded that there is no significant relationship, implying that the identified challenges are experienced by fisherfolks regardless of their specific demographic background.
What are some of the environmental factors specifically highlighted?
The study highlights the impacts of rising temperatures, strong waves damaging fishing nets, coral bleaching, and sea-level rise on fishing infrastructure.
What are the researchers' recommendations for the local government?
The researchers recommend that the local government initiate programs to improve socio-economic status, provide training on modern fishing techniques, and address work attitude and interpersonal skills.
