The aim is, simply put, to find the recipe for success in the startup world. Therefore, in a first step, special emphasis is put on the external conditions influencing startups, in particular legal questions and education in the field of entrepreneurial action and thinking. Secondly, internal conditions, as the influcence and role of co-founders and the importance of work culture are examined. In a third and final step, light is shed on supporting forces for startups, in particular financial funding and networking conditions.

Research Objectives and Key Topics

The primary objective of this work is to analyze the structural and cultural differences between the startup ecosystems in Germany and the United States, specifically exploring why the U.S. successfully fosters global tech giants (GAFA) while Germany lags behind in reaching a comparable scale of innovation and market impact.

  • Comparative analysis of external framework conditions, including bureaucracy and legal accessibility.
  • Evaluation of the role of education and entrepreneurial mindset in school systems.
  • Examination of internal organizational factors, such as team dynamics, work culture, and co-founder selection.
  • Assessment of support systems like incubators, mentorship, and the availability of venture capital.
  • Identification of success factors that differentiate U.S. startup environments from the German landscape.

Excerpt from the Book

3.Internal conditions affecting startup companies

As described above, internal conditions are factors that are controlled and governed by the company itself.

In general, the focus of internal factors of german startups and american startups on entirely different levels. While American startup companies focus on the team, a work culture that fits the company's vision and the right co-founder, German startup companies focus on the product, marketing strategy and ability to scale. Some conclusions can be drawn from these findings. American startup companies first build a foundation and then take care of the product. From the experience of my own start-up company, I can say that the product will change over time. That's how it's been on Facebook, Google, Amazon, and Apple, and it will always be the same. If the startup company doesn't have a strong foundation, it can't withstand these changes. At the beginning of every startup company you have a vision, this vision is the compass and the heart of the company, but the vision is not static, but always flexible. As a start-up company, you need employees who harmonize with each other and survive these rapid visions of change. But if you do it like in Germany and concentrate only on the product, the marketing, and the scalability, no working culture can be created and therefore no strong harmonizing team.
