This paper the researcher interprets one of the difficult texts in the New Testament, namely Hebrews 6:4-6. First, the paper attempts to set the light on the historical background of the letter (the author, the date of writing and the audiences), understanding the new meaning of faith through the whole letter. This paper argues that there are many views concerning Hebrews 6:4-6. First, the audiences are true believers facing real danger of Apostasy. Second, the audiences are true believers facing hypothetical Apostasy (the author was sure of their faith).

Third view claimes that the author has a pastoral crisis with his Christian community. So, he uses the warning tone to keep them on the right track of Faith from the author point of view. The fourth view was speaking about false believers who rejected Jesus Christ when the waves of persecutions crushed them. The paper also presents a personal proposed view of the text; which is the author is trying to shift his audiences from the old Jewish life which was full of rituals to get the repentance; into the new Christian life which is the repentance is depending on Jesus Christ as the high priest who was crucified once and for all.

Objectives and Topics

This paper examines the theological implications of Hebrews 6:4-6, arguing that the passage is not a warning regarding the loss of eternal salvation, but rather an exhortation intended to lead the community toward maturity in faith and a move away from reliance on ritualistic practices.

  • Historical context and background of the Epistle to the Hebrews.
  • Exegetical interpretation of Hebrews 6:4-6 within the broader letter.
  • Analysis of four major theological perspectives on apostasy.
  • The relationship between Jewish ritual tradition and Christian faith maturity.
  • Application of the text to the contemporary Egyptian church context.

Excerpt from the Book

Proposed Personal Interpretation

We cannot neglect that the community of Hebrews were Jewish people before believing in Christ. Also, the author of Hebrews showed a well knowledge of the OT; he interpreted the OT texts in the light of the NT (Heb 11). So, before I present my Personal proposal, we must admit that there is a strong effect of the OT on the theology of Hebrews and on its Author.

First, I agree with the first three views that the audiences were true believers. Using the first person by the author in plural way was evidence that he was sure about their faith and salvation. These people- including the author himself- were under real danger of persecution.

Second, according to Alexander, the expression “it’s impossible” in v4 cannot be understood as “it’s difficult”; this word governed the 3 verses. So the author here is emphasizing that there is no way for those people to repent again. But we claimed from the previous paragraph that those people were real believers. So, the main question here is “how did the audiences of Hebrews understand the work of repentance?” As it’s noticed that the author started his letter with a huge OT entrance “In many and various ways God spoke of old to our fathers by the prophets” (Heb 1:1). And he quoted from OT many times (e.g. Psalm 2, Book of Genesis). The author knew that the background of his audiences were a genuine Jewish background. According to Buchanan, the author of Hebrews was sectarian. This claim puts a different aspect for understanding the type of falling in v6.
