This essay focuses on the role of the TOWS matrix in strategy work. The purpose of this perspective is to reflect upon the usage, experience and usefulness of using the TOWS (Threats, Opportunities, Weaknesses, Strengths) matrix based on personal impressions and experience made as a strategy consultant working on a strategic project for Nike’s footwear segment in the USA. A TOWS matrix was created for the presentation.
The key findings are that the TOWS matrix facilitates the development of strategic options which consider both external and internal factors. Moreover, the TOWS matrix forces a view on threats and weaknesses to make practitioners aware of aspects that need to be improved, overcome or changed. However, it has also been found that the TOWS matrix can frame and limit the thinking.

Excerpt from the Book
Underlying assumptions impacted our thinking as strategists
My team noted some underlying assumptions. First, we assumed that all relevant information was available and consequently, that our TOWS matrix depicted the most important aspects. This can be criticised, because generally, tools don't provide facts unless practitioners have unbiased and complete information, which Hunter (2016) claims, cannot be achieved. My team read several studies and examined databases, which, in general, is time-consuming and therefore costly. Nonetheless, it was impossible to consider every bit of information for our strategy work. Johnson et al. (2017) already discovered that strategy tools may lead practitioners to oversimplify complex content and therefore make less efficient decisions. Moreover, they discovered the phenomenon of ‘paralysis by analysis’, where strategy practitioners take too much time working on tools, and not enough time for the decision-making and implementation (Johnson et al., 2017). An additional issue was that, the information that was available in the past, we were again only reacting to past conditions and experience.
