People of Northeast India are racially regarded as closer to Southeast Asia hence their distance from the ‘mainstream’. This study reveals how indigeneity, ethnicity and territorial factors remain persistent themes in the postcolonial identity politics of Northeast India, which were reinforced by factors such as emergence of middle class, formal education, Christianity and an in-group sentiment. Author argues that an end to ethnic conflicts in Northeast should result in making border area a passageway linking India to the rest of Asia, economically and culturally.
