This paper aims at giving an evaluation of the "Camu at y Gymraeg" Welsh learning site, an online course in the Welsh language offered by the University of Wales, Lampeter. Although it is a relatively new player on the field of education, e-learning is seen by some as the solution to all problems faced by universities today and by others as the end of decent education itself. While a number of e-learning projects have been established so far and some amount of study has been conducted as to the optimisation of e-learning, few projects are being evaluated for their use, despite the fact that they quite often claim substantial budgets for their funding.

This paper will examine the functionalities offered by the "Camu" course and in turn discuss their implementation and design, offering possible suggestions for improvement. A focus will be on the tools for communication, as this area is crucial for learner motivation and achievement.

Research Objectives and Key Topics

The primary objective of this paper is to conduct a critical evaluation of the "Camu at y Gymraeg" online Welsh language course offered by the University of Wales, Lampeter, by examining its functionalities, design, and pedagogical implementation to identify areas for potential improvement.

  • Analysis of e-learning functionalities and their effectiveness in language acquisition.
  • Evaluation of communication tools and their role in learner motivation.
  • Assessment of the course design, navigation, and pedagogical structure.
  • Investigation of multimedia integration, specifically audio data implementation.
  • Identification of gaps in content delivery and suggestions for optimization.

Excerpt from the Book

3.5.1 Implementation of audio data

The audio data is delivered in two formats, wave files and RealAudio files. While the wave files are used for the shorter clips, vocabulary and dialogue are presented as Real media. Not only is it an undesirable solution to use two media formats for audio data, one of them proprietary, the sound data is not embedded into the page, the files are just hyperlinked to. While this is not problematic for the Real files, as they are opened in a player application anyway, it may cause an inconvenience with the wave files for which a variety of playback methods exist. This may in the worst case - depending on user settings - result in the wave file being loaded in the window previously showing the learning unit, the user having to return to the page after the the sound has been played.

This is combined with the problem of delays due to transmission and opening of audio files. Depending on the individual network connection available, loading of a short sound clip from the unit may take up to 30 seconds, after which time, learner attention has quite possibly strayed from the item explicated by the sound data. This problem could easily be avoided by presenting the audio data in another format.
