Faith Community Hospital is experiencing challenges not uncommon to the industry. In a complex field, such as medicine, morals, duties, responsibilities, and personal belief systems all become a jumbled mess creating huge areas of gray, instead of the clear-cut black and white operational processes typical in a business. Because of this lack of clarity, Faith Community Hospital has found itself amidst a sea of troubles.

Excerpt from the Book

Challenges for Faith Community Hospital:

First and foremost, Faith is faced with the challenge of each staff member interpreting what their duties and responsibilities to be in their own personal fashion. As mentioned above, this is not uncommon in the industry. Each staff member comes to Faith with their own personal biases that affect their decision-making processes in situations. This inconsistency in decisions due to personal biases is exacerbated by the emotionally charged situations that these team members are dealing with. Members of the Faith organization are literally dealing with life and death situations, and this intensity of emotion can often cloud one’s thought processes.

This is reflected in the divergent actions that are currently taking place at Faith. Child Protective Services is currently in the process of taking custody of a baby in Faith’s Neo-Natal Ward, due to the staff’s compliance with the parent’s wishes not to provide services. Do Not Resuscitate directives were implemented in ICU recently, without written orders. Other staff members who feel that everything medically necessary should be done to preserve life have disobeyed Do Not Resuscitate orders that were in place. All three incidents were completely supported by family members.

The disparities in treatment do not stop there. One hospital pharmacists is filling uninsured prescriptions and accepting payment in installments. Two counselors are treating unauthorized patients pro bono. Yet, other staff members are so concerned with the financial survival of Faith Community Hospital that they’ve taken the complete opposite approach and are insisting that insurance is confirmed for patients prior to their treatment. With such contradictions in staff decisions, it’s not surprising that Faith is experiencing troubles.
