The purpose of the study was to establish risk factors and prevalence of suicidal behaviour among Kenyan youth due to worrying trend frequently reported suicide cases amongst young people in Kenya.
The occurrence of reported suicide cases amongst young people in Kenya is alarming and yet many cases go unreported in most cultures in Kenya due social stigma associated with suicide. It is worth noting that suicide in Kenya has become more rampant among the youth than adults and that the majority of reported suicide cases happen amongst youth in high schools, colleges and universities.

Zielsetzung und Themenschwerpunkte (Objectives and Key Themes)
This study aimed to identify risk factors associated with increased suicide rates among Kenyan youth in secondary schools. The research utilized a sample of university and high school students, employing instruments such as the Beck Scale for Suicide Ideation (BSS). The study sought to understand the prevalence of suicidal behaviors (thoughts, plans, and attempts) within this population.
- Risk factors for suicidal behavior among Kenyan youth
- Prevalence of suicidal ideation and attempts among the studied population
- The role of mental health in suicidal behavior

Zusammenfassung der Kapitel (Chapter Summaries)
1. Introduction: This chapter establishes the alarming prevalence of suicide among Kenyan youth, highlighting the underreporting due to social stigma. It underscores the study's objective: to determine risk factors for increased suicide cases among Kenyan youth. The chapter uses global statistics on suicide to emphasize the significance of the issue and the need for further research, specifically within the context of Kenyan youth.
2. Literature review: This chapter reviews existing literature on suicide, exploring various risk factors. It examines the links between mental disorders (depression, substance abuse), family issues, cultural influences, health conditions, psychological factors, academic pressure, and cyberbullying, and their contribution to suicidal behavior among youth. The chapter integrates various studies from different geographical regions, comparing and contrasting findings related to the prevalence of suicidal ideation and attempts in different cultural contexts, providing context for the current study.
3. Materials and Methods: This chapter details the research methodology. It outlines the study's purpose, objectives, and hypotheses. The chapter describes the study population (university and high school students), the sampling technique, the measures used (including the Beck Scale for Suicide Ideation), and the data analysis methods. It ensures the study's rigor and reproducibility by clearly laying out the procedures undertaken.
4. Results and Discussions: This chapter presents the study's findings regarding the identified risk factors associated with suicidal behaviors among Kenyan youth. It discusses the prevalence of suicidal thoughts, plans, and attempts within the study sample and analyzes the relationships between these behaviors and various factors such as dysfunctional families, academic pressure, media influence, depression, and relationship problems. The discussion section contextualizes these findings within the existing literature reviewed earlier.
