In this paper it is going to be discussed about the principles of teaching reading, the challenges adults face when reading as well as some effective English reading strategies from adult learner’s perspective and some strategies along with reading activities.
Reading is essential to the development of second language competence. People acquire listening and speaking skills through listening to the music, watching TV and movies, having contact with native speakers but reading into a second language involves more than listening and speaking abilities because reading is used for academic and professional purposes. Reading in a foreign language involve readers into a different culture and offers them a new experience and new conversational situations which help them in language learning and improving the four language skills reading, speaking, listening and writing. The improvement of reading skills will facilitate the development of all other abilities.

Chapter Summaries
Introduction: This introductory chapter establishes the significance of reading in second language acquisition, emphasizing its role beyond listening and speaking skills. It highlights the importance of reading for academic and professional purposes, cultural immersion, and the overall improvement of language skills. The chapter sets the stage for the subsequent exploration of teaching principles, challenges faced by adult learners, and effective strategies for improving reading comprehension.
Some principles on teaching reading to adults: This chapter delves into the core principles of effective reading instruction for adults. It emphasizes the interconnectedness of alphabetic principles (word analysis and phonemic awareness), fluency (reading with speed, accuracy, and expression), and vocabulary development. The chapter argues that successful reading comprehension relies on the reader's ability to decode words accurately, read fluently, and possess sufficient vocabulary to understand the text. The author stresses the importance of connecting new concepts with prior knowledge and past experiences for enhanced comprehension. The significance of each principle is discussed in detail, including how these elements contribute to overall reading proficiency. The discussion connects the concepts of word analysis, phonemic awareness, and the importance of utilizing dictionaries for improved vocabulary.
Three common challenges adults face when reading: This chapter focuses on the difficulties encountered by adult learners during the reading process. It identifies decoding problems, stemming from unfamiliar terminology, particularly in scientific or academic texts, as a major challenge. The chapter also highlights poor comprehension arising from difficulties in decoding and limited vocabulary. It further discusses attention problems as a significant factor affecting reading comprehension, particularly when dealing with post-reading exercises that demand detailed understanding. Finally, the chapter addresses the issue of reading speed, explaining how unfamiliarity with vocabulary can significantly slow down reading pace. The chapter underlines how these issues impact the effectiveness and efficiency of adult learners' reading comprehension, requiring specific instructional strategies to address them.
Effective English Reading Strategies from adult learner's perspective: This chapter defines reading strategies as intentional and directed actions used to control and improve the reading process. It categorizes these strategies into global strategies (skimming, previewing, predicting, scanning), problem-solving strategies (for tackling comprehension difficulties), and support strategies (aimed at enhancing understanding). The chapter emphasizes the role of reading factors such as purpose, reader's proficiency, and text type in influencing strategy selection and effectiveness. It sets the stage for the following chapters' discussion of specific strategies and activities designed to address these challenges.
