Corus primarily manufactures coated and uncoated strip products. In addition, they manufacture sections and plates, as well as wire rod, engineering steels, and semi-finished carbon steel product. Corus also produces both rolled and extruded aluminum products, in addition to their steel products. By analyzing Corus Group’s strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats, one can better understand where their strategic advantages may lie. It is important for any organization to recognize and build upon their strengths, while trying to improve upon their weaknesses. In addition, it is always prudent to try to take advantage of opportunities, while defending against potential threats.

One of Corus Group’s strengths is their global positioning. “Corus has sales offices in over 20 countries supported by a worldwide trading network and a number of processing and service centers.” (“Products”) This, in addition to their production facilities located in several countries, allows them to service a truly international client base. Because of this, they have been able to develop relationships with customers in markets that are more difficult to break into, such as China.

In addition to this global positioning, another strength of Corus is their production of a diverse group of products. Their currently produced products include: aluminum products, channels, columns, electrical steels, engineering billet and bar, joists, light-gauge steel for packing and non-packing, processing, railway products, semi-finished steel, special strip, stainless steel, steel plate products, strip products, tube products, universal beams, and wire rod. (“Products”) This diversity allows them to minimize downturns in one particular industry.

Corus Group’s weaknesses lie in the perceived instability of the company. Their current strategic plan involves the laying off of some 12,000 workers and selling of their aluminum and stainless steel units. Although this will allow them to focus on their carbon steel division, it not only affects employee moral, but it may be more difficult to attract the best talent when filling open positions.
