Excerpt from the Book
5.2 Political situation in the past
President Leonid Kuchma, together with the oligarch clans, ran politics beginning in 1994, and lasting until recently. The so-called clans were powerful businessmen as well as politicians supporting Kuchma. In 1994, Kuchma was voted for president of Ukraine, and in 1999 he was re-elected. As the president is only eligible to be elected for a second term, he could not be re-elected once again afterwards. The time of Kuchma’s presidency could be described as full of economic reforms, bringing economic growth to the country, but also corruption and worsening human rights records (cf Woehrel 2006, p.1 a).
In September 2004, shortly before the presidential election at the end of the year, Viktor Yushchenko, one of the candidates, claimed he had been poisoned. Later, it was found out that he had been poisoned with dioxins. The striking fact is that shortly before Yushchenko fell ill, he went for dinner with the chairman of the Ukrainian Security Service and his deputy, which gave way for a poisoning theory. All accusations were denied by officials working for Yushchenko’s rival, Yanukovych, though. Nevertheless, Yushchenko ran for presidency in the end of the year, successfully (cf news.bbc.co.uk).
