Excerpt from the Book
3.1 Main characteristics of magical realism in She plays with the darkness
In she plays with the darkness magical elements are imbedded in a story that seems very realistic because of e.g. the very detailed description of feasts. There are a large number of irreducible elements of magic. The mist is a mystical element that appears again and again in the whole story. In the very first lines of the novel the mist is mentioned:
“[…] They are sad people inside, tormented by the knowledge that one day the great mist will rise and fall and suffocate them all to death. And no one can do anything about it. The mist has a mind on its own. It does what it wants to do when he wants to do it. No one can stop it.”
Because this is the very beginning of the novel, the reader has no idea, whether the mist is a legend, a dream or reality. That the mist is a magical thing, not a dream or legend, comes clear to the reader in chapter twelve. Shana, a musician boy and friend of Dikosha, gets killed by the mist. He was always afraid of the mist and finally gets killed by it:
“[…] Then he turned and ran fast as he could. But the mist was at his heels. It caught up with him and threw him to the ground. The mist began to suffocate him. He let out a muffled scream, and kicked his legs, fighting against the mist, as it wrestled him over and over. Then suddenly he was still. His body lay sprawling on the ground, his face contorted by a frozen scream.”
By that time, it comes clear to the reader that the mist isn’t an illusion of the people but reality in She plays with the darkness.
