Excerpt from the Book

3.1 Fake Impressions

The first aspect that makes this story a dystopian one is the fake impression most people in this society are trying to express. The bright, pale colors selected for this episode are a perfect match for this aspect as it makes everything look plastic-like and fake. Everything in their world looks too clean and perfect. But especially Lacie is a good example of this society’s fake lifestyle. She is checking her phone constantly and rating everyone she meets in the hope of getting a better rating herself. Especially when she practices laughing in front of her mirror one realizes how much of a performance she is trying to put on [0:01:48]. Her brother knows this, which becomes especially clear when he jokingly says ”good luck with your performance” [0:25:08] before Lacie heads out to get to Naomi’s wedding.

This aspect is also highlighted at the beginning of the episode where Lacie meets Bethany at the elevator. Both times this happens these are very awkward and cringy situations. The first thing both do is checking each other’s social media feed so they know what to talk about [0:05:25]. This emphasizes how superficial and useless social interactions are and how everyone scared everyone is of saying something that could negatively impact their rating. That these interactions are not fun for Lacie at all becomes especially evident when you focus on her facial expressions in the elevator every time they are not talking [0:05:25-0:06:08]. She looks really uncomfortable.
