Testing is an important part of language teaching. Tests can be used to place students in courses according to their knowledge, to diagnose their strengths and weaknesses, to identify their proficiency etc. There are many theories about what tests should analyse and how they should be taken. Depending on the relevance of the results, tests need to be more or less accurate. Furthermore, they should have a beneficial backwash on teaching. It is thus at least as important to examine testing itself.

Objectives and Topics

This academic paper aims to compare two computer-based language testing methods, the C-Test and Rapid Profile, by analyzing their underlying theories, testing mechanisms, and practical applicability in educational contexts.

  • Theoretical foundations of computer-based language assessment
  • Methodological overview of C-Test and Rapid Profile
  • Comparative analysis of test reliability and validity
  • Evaluation of practical benefits and limitations for language teaching

Excerpt from the Book

4.1. What is Rapid Profile?

Rapid Profile is an objective, indirect, integrative online test based on Second Language Acquisition-Theory. It measures learners’ proficiency in English but also gives evidence about their strengths and weaknesses. Thus, Rapid Profile has a beneficial backwash on teaching independent of the learners’ age. Being a computer-based test, it is a very quick method to determine a candidate’s competence in the target language. Similar to the C-Test, Rapid Profile can be used for numerous purposes.

The test takes about ten to fifteen minutes. It is carried out by two analysts: one incites the testee to talk by interviewing him and the other one works with the programme. Possible methods are to show the candidate a picture and to make him talk about what he can see on it or spot differences between two or more pictures, informal interviews etc. There are various tasks that can be used to analyse particular structures. At the same time, the other analyst documents the emergence of key grammatical structures of syntax and morphology by clicking on the corresponding buttons on the user interface. There are eight categories comprising one or several structures: Negation, Word Order, Question, General, Verb, Noun and Pronoun. Rapid Profile automatically stores and analyses the occurrence of the features. The results are criterion-referenced. By determining a stage between 1 and 6, they give evidence not only of the learner’s general competence but also of his weaknesses.

Summary of Chapters

1 Introduction: Provides an overview of the role of testing in language teaching and introduces the two computer-based methods under investigation.

2 Language Testing: Requirements, Types and Properties: Defines fundamental assessment principles like reliability and validity and classifies different test types such as proficiency and diagnostic tests.

3 The C-Test: Details the C-Test methodology as an integrative, objective tool and explains its foundation in the concept of reduced redundancy.

4 Rapid Profile: Describes the Rapid Profile system, its administrative process involving two analysts, and its basis in Processability Theory.

5 C-Test vs. Rapid Profile: Contrasts both methods regarding their economic efficiency, adaptability, and educational impact.

6 Conclusion: Summarizes that both tests are valuable but serve different purposes, with the C-Test being more economical and Rapid Profile offering deeper diagnostic insights.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the core focus of this paper?

The paper examines and compares two specific computer-based language testing methods: the C-Test and Rapid Profile.

What are the primary thematic areas covered?

The work covers language testing requirements, the theoretical backgrounds of assessment methods (specifically Processability Theory and Information Theory), and the practical application of these digital tools.

What is the main objective of the research?

The goal is to determine the advantages and disadvantages of each testing method to help educators choose the most appropriate tool for specific assessment scenarios.

Which scientific methods are utilized?

The author employs a comparative analysis approach, juxtaposing the structural and theoretical frameworks of both tests against established standards of language acquisition and assessment.

What is discussed in the main body of the text?

The main body breaks down the definition, theoretical underpinning, and procedural implementation of both the C-Test and the Rapid Profile system.

Which keywords define this work?

Key terms include Language Testing, C-Test, Rapid Profile, Validity, Reliability, and Processability Theory.

Why is the "backwash" effect significant for Rapid Profile?

The backwash effect is considered beneficial because Rapid Profile provides detailed feedback on a learner's specific strengths and weaknesses, allowing teachers to target development-ready structures.

How does the requirement of analysts differ between the two tests?

The C-Test is highly economical and requires no trained personnel, whereas Rapid Profile requires two trained analysts to conduct the test and document structures effectively.
