Im textorientierten Teil dieser Hausarbeit werde ich eine kurze Inhaltsangabe des zweiten Kapitels des Romans „The Jungle“ von Upton Sinclair geben und anschließend die mir am wichtigsten erscheinenden stilistischen Mittel nennen und deren Wirkung erklären.
1.1. Inhaltsangabe
Im zweiten Kapitel von Upton Sinclairs Roman „The Jungle“ handelt die Geschichte von Jurgis Rudkus , einem gut gebauten, großen, selbstbewussten, jungen Mann, der gemeinsam mit seiner Familie und Freunden - darunter auch seine Freundin Ona - seine Heimat Brelovicz in Litauen verlässt, um in den Vereinigten Staaten von America sein Glück zu finden. Es verschlägt sie in die Arbeiterstadt Chicago. Sie wissen von einem Bekannten - Jokubas Szedvilas - , der sich hier bereits eine Existenz aufgebaut haben soll. Die Emigration in die Metropole bedeutet für die Familie jedoch eine große Umstellung, da sie ausschließlich an das einfache Leben auf dem Land gewöhnt ist.
Jurgis träumt von einem Leben als verheirateter, reicher Mann, einem Leben, in dem er sich keine Sorgen machen muss, einem Leben ohne Pflichten. Der Erfüllung dieses Traumes stehen jedoch einige Hindernisse im Weg, denn die Reise der litauischen Emigranten endet in einer der übelsten Gegenden der Stadt. Überwältigt von der endlichen Ankunft wird Oda und ihm diese Tatsache jedoch erst bewusst, als sie sich in der Umgebung umsehen: Hier spielen Kinder in Abwasserpfützen und der Gestank des städtischen Abfalls lässt die Menschen sich ein Taschentuch vor Mund und Nase halten. Die Luft ist von schmutzigem Rauch und ohrenbetäubendem Lärm gezeichnet. Osteuropäische Emigrantenfamilien wohnen nicht selten gemeinsam mit vierzehn Menschen in einem Zimmer, wobei es üblich ist, dass sich jeweils zwei Bewohner im Wechsel eine einzige Pritsche oder Matratze teilen.
Auch Jurgis steht dieses unmenschliche Schicksal bevor, was ihn beim ersten Gedanken daran verzweifeln lässt. Aber immer noch mit der festen Hoffnung, all seine Träume eines Tages erfüllen zu können, beschließt er zielsicher, einen Ausweg zu finden. Noch am nächsten Tag wird er sich einen Arbeitsplatz suchen.

Upton Sinclair beginnt dieses zweite Kapitel seines Romans sehr abrupt. Ohne jegliche Einleitung wird der Leser sofort mit dem Protagonisten Jurgis Rudkus konfrontiert („Jurgis talked lightly about work“2). Doch auch, wenn man das einführende erste Kapitel nicht gelesen haben sollte, findet man sich recht schnell in die Geschichte ein. Denn nach einem ersten kurzen Abschnitt über Jurgis’ Einstellung zu körperlicher Arbeit springt Sinclair um anderthalb Jahre zurück, um seinen Lesern zu vermitteln, wie und warum Jurgis nach Amerika kam.
Als allwissender Autor lässt er den Leser an Jurgis’ Gedanken teilhaben. Hierbei werden jedoch ausschließlich dessen Gedanken und Träume erwähnt; die jeglicher Nebenfiguren bleiben verborgen. Vielleicht, weil sie ihm nicht als erwähnenswert genug erscheinen.
Sinclair bedient sich in diesem Romanauszug an vielen sprachlichen Mitteln. Insgesamt hat seine Art zu Schreiben sehr romantische Züge. Dies spiegelt sich besonders in Sätzen wie „[…] a place of which lovers and young people dreamed“3 oder „[…] a dream of […] opportunity and freedom, of life and love […]”3 wider. Hiermit zeigt er auf, dass er und auch seine Charaktere sehr hoffnungsvoll sind.
