Summary Excerpt Details

This report refers to the MBA course module “decision and information analysis” and is divided in three parts, depending on each given situation.

In doing so, the author refers to three different practical situations, all of them referring to different theories and techniques, namely (1) Soft Systems Methodology (SSM), (2) Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) and (3) Alexandrian Pattern Analysis (APA) applied to Metcalfe’s law. All assumptions are stated and reasoned in the appendix.

This report aims to give an insight into how these theoretical methods can be applied to practical challenges, demonstrating a critical analysis of the respective issues.

For each situation, relevant theories are explained and applied to practice, prior to critically analysing and evaluating them. The author concludes with the findings on each of the three issues by the means of review and perspectives.

Research Objectives & Core Topics

This report provides an insight into how three distinct theoretical methods—Soft Systems Methodology (SSM), the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP), and Alexandrian Pattern Analysis (APA) applied to Metcalfe’s Law—can be utilized to navigate complex practical business challenges. The primary research objective is to demonstrate the critical application, analysis, and evaluation of these techniques in real-world scenarios, ranging from organizational change management in charities to strategic process prioritization in global banking.

  • Application of Soft Systems Methodology for problem-solving in non-profit organizations.
  • Strategic ranking of corporate reengineering processes using the Analytical Hierarchy Process.
  • Development of best-practice procurement processes leveraging Alexandrian Pattern Analysis.
  • Critical evaluation of decision-making frameworks and their susceptibility to subjective influence.
  • Analysis of network effects and their impact on process efficiency under Metcalfe’s Law.

Pattern for “bidding process”

< no photograph available >

This pattern is concerned with the bidding process as part of the procurement process from a company’s point of view, placing their requirements online. The pattern helps to make the wider audience understand the information as provided by the experts.

###

The bidding process involves various bidders for a specific product to be supplied to the company, who get in contact via an online network platform. For its success, both quality and quantity of participants are crucial.

To get in contact with potential suppliers, online platforms are very common. As various options exist, it is crucial to select the proper platform, fitting to the company’s need. In general, a platform should provide (1) state-of-the-art IT equipment, (2) quality and quantity of information (3) relevant participants, i.e. those who place a bit and those who bit for it.

To choose the platform, the company’s requirements regarding products needed such as quantity, quality, timing, reliability of supplier and cost have to be defined. Based on this requirement, the company has to choose the best platform, e.g. by evaluating the decision alternatives via the AHP technique; selection of alternatives is facilitated as in practice only few major platforms per market segment exist and sub-platforms are linked to this platform. The interested parties have to register at the website and only those who provide all information required will be allowed to participate in the online bidding processes via the platform. In line with Metcalfe’s law, the more people using the network platform, the higher is the value, i.e. the more people can be reached via a specific platform, the greater the benefit is – as long as both the relevant persons and a minimum number of persons are reached.

This pattern fits with various other patterns within the field of business. Similar process patterns can also be found for online auctions such as EBAY or business networking platforms such as OPEN BC.

Chapter Summaries

1. Soft Systems Methodology (SSM): Challenges in fundraising at a Yorkshire not-for-profit charity society: This chapter introduces SSM as a tool for structuring complex, "soft" problem situations, demonstrating its application to organizational fundraising challenges.

2. Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP): Ranking of processes for a leading global investment bank: This chapter explores the use of AHP as a mathematical decision-support technique to prioritize reengineering initiatives based on multiple quantitative and qualitative criteria.

3. Alexandrian Pattern Analysis (APA): Development of a best practice process for procurement considering Metcalfe’s Law: This chapter discusses the adaptation of architectural pattern analysis to business process development, specifically evaluating procurement bidding strategies in the context of network value.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the core focus of this report?

The report focuses on the practical application of three management science methodologies: SSM, AHP, and APA, to address distinct business challenges in organizational management, banking, and procurement.

What are the primary thematic areas covered?

The themes include strategic decision-making, process optimization, network value realization, and the critical evaluation of theoretical models in real-world environments.

What is the central research objective?

The objective is to provide insight into how these theoretical techniques are applied to practical issues and to critically evaluate their effectiveness and potential limitations in a business context.

Which scientific methods are employed in the study?

The study utilizes Soft Systems Methodology for qualitative "soft" problem structuring, the Analytical Hierarchy Process for mathematical multi-criteria decision-making, and Alexandrian Pattern Analysis for best-practice process design.

What is the primary content of the main section?

The main section contains three detailed case studies, each applying one of the aforementioned methodologies to specific scenarios: a charity society, a global investment bank, and a manufacturing company's procurement process.

Which keywords characterize this work?

The work is characterized by terms such as Systems Thinking, Process Reengineering, Decision Analysis, Network Effects, and Management Strategy.

How does the author propose to minimize the risk of subjective manipulation in AHP?

The author recommends conducting group discussions to determine the ranking criteria, thereby ensuring the results are more reliable and facilitating better acceptance of the final decision.

What is the main critique regarding the application of Metcalfe’s Law in this document?

The document highlights that while network effects add value, the value of a network is not infinite; therefore, it is essential to focus on a minimum threshold of relevant participants rather than just total volume.
