TB played a big role in history. So, the “big white plague” remains about 200 years until 1900 and killed more than 1 billion people in Europe (Kerksiek, 2009). The disease influenced art and music of those times, as the health of famous people like Matthias Claudius, Friedrich Schiller, Carl Maria von Weber, and Frederic Chopin was affected, too.
Today, citizens of developed countries nearly don’t know even the name “Tuberculosis”. This lack of knowledge doesn’t stop in front of the healthcare system; TB seems to be just a historical note.
Till the year 2015 Tuberculosis was said to be defeated in Germany. Only 5,865 new infections, less than 0.05 % of cases all over the world, were counted at the time (Hillienhof, 2016).
In contrast to that situation, worldwide the disease spread enormously, so today it is still one of the top 10 causes of death (WHO, 2018).
