The Fifth Dalai Lama was not only an influential spiritual figure in Buddhist history, but also an important political leader. For the purpose of this research, the author wants to show the link between the political activism and the religious leadership in form of the Fifth Dalai Lama. Moreover, the author concentrates on how he managed to legitimate his social position placed at the top of Tibetan society, by working out the most significant and relevant historical facts in that period, that had a strong impact on the beliefs of the Tibetans - politically and religiously.

The second chapter depicts the situation of Lhasa in the seventeenth century and the role the fifth Dalai Lama played in the unification of Tibet, in the rise of the Gelukpa order and consequently in the establishment of the Ganden Podrang government in the 1640s. The focus of the third chapter will lie on Lobzang Gyatso’s social position as the supreme ruler of all Tibet, especially in form of the "Great Fifth" as a reincarnation of a bodhisattva. In this context, the question relies on how did the Fifth Dalai Lama achieved to enhance his political project and what was he capable of achieving by doing so? The fourth chapter describes one of his guiding goals: the propagation of Tibetan Buddhism in the non-Tibetan sphere, namely in the north-east of Tibet by enhancing relations with the Manchu emperor of China.

Excerpt from the Book

The Fifth Dalai Lama as the surrogate of Avalokiteshvara

Concerning the relationship between religion and politics in the seventeenth century of Tibet it is important to understand how the Fifth Dalai Lama instrumentalized the Avalokitesvara practice, which is a “religion of faith in a sovereign being” to express his legal authority. This is based on the idea that the Dalai Lama is the surrogate of Chänräzig (Avalokiteshvara).

As early as the Great Fifth Ngawang Lozang Gyatso and the Gelukpa school came to power in 1642, not only Buddhism gradually was placed at the center of Tibetan life, but also a centralized government was reestablished and consequently, a source of legitimacy and authority for the new policy, termed ‘chö si nyi dän’ (‘religion and politics’), was aspired by the Dalai Lama and his associates. In this process of a religious and legal basis for the new government, the Great Fifth himself aimed at creating a vision of political validation depending on a symbolic foundation and prevalent in the Tibetan imaginary of the time. An imaginary which was based on the common belief that “religion influences worldly matters.” Thus, the reestablishment of the geo-political centrality of his government in Lhasa was accomplished through the embodiment and assimilation of Buddhist symbols or more precisely with the myth of the Bodhisattva figure of Avalokiteshvara, the Lord of Mercy.

By using the grand tradition of Avalokiteshvara of whom the Dalai Lama was the earthly incarnation, the Great Fifth himself played a crucial role in the creation of this spiritual and temporal union. Especially in his writings, the Great Fifth emphatically provides the association between the Dalai Lamas and Avalokiteshvara with a political dimension, i.e. the political succession by incarnation. Thereby creating legitimacy, expressed by the fact that “the divine origin or theocratic conception of rule is also another form of political authority sanctioned or sanctified by religion”. By using the image of Avalokiteshvara as the patron deity of Tibet and by simultaneously bringing about the Ganden Podrang government, his political project of placing himself as the spiritual and secular head of Tibet was deeply connected with his concern of building his own public image, or his political persona.
