With the assistance of corpus-based stylistic techniques, this study quantifies the aspect of lexical density as a stylistic marker in the context of literature represented by three English novels written by Ernest Hemingway: The Sun Also Rises (1926), A Farewell to Arms (1929) and A Moveable Feast (1964). It also exhibits lexical density profile (LDP) as a statistical measure of lexicality within literary texts. Three hypotheses are included in this study: Corpus-based techniques are quite helpful in producing empirical and quantitative stylistic descriptions of literary texts in so far as lexical density is concerned, lexical density profile is an efficient measure for lexicality within literary texts as well as the lexical development of the writer's style, and the high percentages of lexical density are due to the high lexical items leading to denser lexical profiles

1.1 The Problem
Detecting lexicality of bulky literary texts is not a straightforward process. It seems a rather difficult task to specify a stable unified measure for the lexical aspects investigated under the umbrella of lexicon statistical measurement. However, this study is an attempt to explore the potentiality of measuring lexical density via corpus-based techniques. More precisely, Lexical density profile is a quite potential tactic for measuring the lexical density of a particular text. It requires a rigorous identification of tokens, types and lexical items weight within texts. Therefore, corpus-based techniques take a large share in fulfilling such a quantitative investigation.
Basically, the calculations of lexical items and function words are rather fuzzy and not that simple because of the various controversies raised about the statistical boundaries between lexical items and function words. Corpus linguistics offers a set of statistical procedures which deal with determining the numbers of those items and words. Next, these numbers are in need to be put in a statistical and yet workable formula to measure the lexical density of a particular text. Lexical density identification will be the last step in this process. The degree of lexicality, resulted from the statistical formula, could tell whether lexical density might be regarded as a stylistic marker or\and a useful criterion for discovering the lexical development or regression of a particular writer's style.
Accordingly, the present study focuses on utilizing corpus-based techniques to quantify one particular aspect of lexical variety within the lexicon. This aspect is concerned with the lexical density identification and its graphical representation lexical density profile. It also focuses on the way this aspect is used as a stylistic marker within literary texts.
