This is how the English language also reached Singapore when it was acquired by the British in 1819. When Singapore gained independence in 1965, four official languages were recognized. Excerpt from the book

Diglossia and the varieties of English

Standard Singaporean English is used by the government, for matters of state and law and for administrational purposes and it is also the language of education while it is also considered to be the high variety of English in Singapore. As the high variety, it was mainly used by people of higher education, working mainly in the most prestigious occupations. However, the great language diversity of the country, affected English and the language acquired characteristics from other languages that were present in the same environment. The English language was also affected by the ethnic and socioeconomic statuses of those using it. This had as a result the appearance of a Creole language, needed to make communication among these people possible. This variety is called Singlish mainly by those who use it and features substantial variation from the Standard. It is a more informal variety which is used mainly for colloquial situations and interactions. Thus a state of diglossia appeared in Singapore concerning the use of English. The two varieties, Standard and Singlish, are both used at the same time in the country, according to the situation and the function served at the time.
