Research Objectives and Themes
This paper aims to investigate the ethnicity and ideological structures present in Donald Trump's tweets regarding the Mexico crisis. By utilizing Van Dijk’s framework of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), the study examines how specific linguistic choices and discursive strategies are employed to construct an image of the "other," link immigration to criminality, and influence public perception.
- The role of Twitter as a political tool for direct communication.
- Application of Van Dijk’s socio-cognitive theory in discourse analysis.
- Deconstruction of negative discursive strategies (e.g., negative comparison, norm violation).
- The construction of the "other" (Middle Easterners and immigrants) in political rhetoric.
- The ideological influence of language on social norms and perceived "truth."
Excerpt from the Book
Norm and value violation
Norm and value violation at this level is known as the most fundamental way of establishing a distinction between them and us. It is not only to describe ourselves in benevolent terms and them in negative terms but to emphasize that the ‘others’ or Muslims violate the very norms and values. It is clearly shown in Trump’s tweet in the recent Christchurch mosque massacre that occurred early 2019, Trump, who was praised in the writings of the man who’s claimed responsibility for the shooting, has not described the massacre in such terms which can be seen in sample 17 and 18 below. The suspect seemed to have a white nationalist philosophy, harboring vehement anti-Muslim and anti-immigrant sentiments. Experts in the field of chan message-board culture where the suspect was a frequent poster cautioned, however, that the apparent manifesto contained many ironic and misleading signals designed to amplify and sow chaos in coverage of the massacre.
But the President did not mention terrorism, bigotry, or the suspect while the other world leaders quickly began decrying as terrorism and a vicious act of “racist hatred”. It clearly shows that the label of terrorism and related negative terms have been established on Muslims solely even though the perpetrator for this case is Muslims, at worst, they are the victims. The situation has been put in this way as Trump eventually has declared the norm and value violation can only be performed by Muslims. He believes that Muslims ignore the important values of political liberty, human rights, or mercy for their people. That is, by violating these norms and values, they have placed themselves outside the realm of civilization, if not of humanity.
