Excerpt from the Book

Chapter 1 Discussion

Today's world calls for managers who are versatile so that they can embrace so that their firms can remain afloat. The reason is that today’s business world is made up of ambiguities and uncertainties due to the rapid changes that keep on being churned out by various sectors of the economy. Managers should learn from the story of Kodak, which refused to embrace change and has consequently been pushed out of the market by the players who embraced change (Hussain et al. 128). The rigidity and high-handedness exercised by managers of the previous decade or century may not work in the present world. Managers should keep their eyes and ears wide open to understand the current trends in their industries and come up with strategies that would give them a competitive edge. Some of the skills required by managers working in these conditions include versatility, excellent communication skills, analytical skills, and building rapport with various industry players. Versatility will help such managers embrace change as it comes. It will ensure that they are not rigid to change, rather, they are ready to learn new skills needed to bolster performance (Onderick-Harvey n.p). Excellent communication skills will help the manager create rapport with the staff, as well as with industry players. In many instances, the staff may understand what is happening on the ground and the changes that need to be effected. However, many managers look down upon the low cadre employees who could have come up with ideas of helping them remain relevant. Good communication skills lead to good relationships between the manager and employees, which also creates a room of consultations and sharing of ideas as the need may arise (Bell & Roebuck 72). Analytical skills help the managers use past and current happenings to determine the likely course of action that they should take to steer their firm in the right direction. Lack of analytical skills may make it hard for managers to predict future occurrences.
