  • The tension between textual autonomy and biographical context
  • Case study: Gertrude Stein’s "Tender Buttons"
  • Case study: Sylvia Plath’s "Daddy"

Excerpt from the Book

The Biographical Criticism Issue

“What matter who’s speaking, someone said, what matter who’s speaking” wrote Samuel Beckett (qtd in Foucault, p. 300). To what extent should knowledge of a poet’s life and opinions shape our interpretation of their poems? Does biographical criticism help to illuminate the texts at hand, or does it mean that we miss possible meanings and echoes in the work?

Biographical Criticism has its origins in the eighteenth century when Samuel Johnson in “The Lives of the English Poets” associates poets’ biographies with a critical evaluation of their work (Childs and Fowler 12). However, modernist critics opposed to this kind of criticism, supporting that the text should be enough and any evaluation based on the author’s life could lead to wrong assumptions about meaning (Childs and Fowler 13). In Wimsatt’s and Beardsley’s “The intentional Fallacy” a successful poem is considered to be a self‐reliant one, one that through its text alone shows what the poet was trying to communicate. Any signs that reveal personality traits or states of mind are only attributed to the poet if strong biographical evidence makes it possible (469‐470). In “What is an Author” Foucault goes even further arguing that only the way language is used is important in the evaluation of writing and so the text should be examined completely independently without considering the author at all (300).
