Excerpt from the Book

B. How Businesses in Africa Can Survive the Pandemic

As the coronavirus pandemic spreads, it threatens the global survival of micro and small businesses. Quarantines, shelter-in-place orders, and social isolation make it challenging for many of these businesses to operate. Micro and small businesses in developing countries are in many ways more susceptible to the effects of this crisis than their counterparts in North America and Europe. Nevertheless, it is imperative to save these companies. According to the International Labor Organization (ILO), approximately 90% of employment in Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia is in enterprises with fewer than 49 employees, and 75% of employment in Latin America and the Caribbean is in enterprises with fewer than 49 employees. These businesses also provide a market for local producers and a source of essential goods and services for vulnerable communities, which is more important than ever, as larger companies tend to overlook these populations.

What can development organizations do to help micro and small businesses survive as African governments implement stringent measures to prevent the spread of the coronavirus?

First, in times of economic stability, there should be entrepreneurship programmes to assist businesses in recognising and seizing new business opportunities. The emphasis should be on expansion: enhancing profitability, expanding sales, and extending community impacts such as hiring and sourcing from local suppliers. In a crisis such as the coronavirus pandemic, this type of expansion is frequently impossible. It is crucial that programmes refocus their short-term objectives on ensuring the survival of businesses. Once the crisis has passed, the focus can return to growth.
